Post #3. You can also run ChkDsk from the Windows Recovery Environment. Look at How to use the Command Prompt in the Vista Windows Recovery Environment.

This will check for errors and inconsistencies on your hard drive.

Enter the commands: chkdsk C: /f or chkdsk C: /r

Keep the spaces as I have written them.

Answer Y when chkdsk asks you if you want to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots.

Ok thanks, would this keep all my original files and documents on my laptop?

Yes, but use System Restore in the first instance.

Read the post and follow the instructions to the letter.

Imgburn is used to create the disc. It is not to be put on the disc. What are you thinking? :)

No problem. Place the disc in the drive and restart the computer. Perhaps if you hit F12 just as the computer is starting you will see an option to change the boot order. You should make sure that the CD/DVD optical drive in first in line.

Then follow the instruction within the link in post #3.

    Many thanks for your help.
I got to the sys restore part as described in the screenshots. I thought there were going to be more option points on where to restore to but the furthest point its letting me go is to when I installed those updates on Friday.
ive restatted it after restoring it to that point, its loaded back eventually to the configuring updates page again!!
