Problems with my laptop...possibly down to a problem with Vista updates?

So I use this Vista recovery to restore the laptop to a point in time? and I will keep my files and docs on the laptop?

No problem. Place the disc in the drive and restart the computer. Perhaps if you hit F12 just as the computer is starting you will see an option to change the boot order. You should make sure that the CD/DVD optical drive in first in line.

I got to the sys restore part as described in the screenshots. I thought there were going to be more option points on where to restore to but the furthest point its letting me go is to when I installed those updates on Friday.
ive restatted it after restoring it to that point, its loaded back eventually to the configuring updates page again!!0 -
