Problems with my laptop...possibly down to a problem with Vista updates?

Hello,

I have been having problems with my laptop; it was working fine on friday afternoon but yesterday daytime it wouldnt load up at all!
Anyways...my laptop wont load up the login page where I type my password. I get a screen (eventually after about 5 mins after switching on the laptop), saying 'configuring updates stage 3 of 3- 0% complete'. It says this for about 5 mins orso and then the laptop restarts itself only to eventually load up the configuring updates page again and then restart and so on. I've had on and off problems with installing updates on this laptop before, I usually avoid choosing the installing them when shutting down the laptop.

I went down to my local Maplin today and the guy said there were loadsa problems with Vista updates etc so they've been stopped or something and recommended me to load Windows 7 onto the laptop but could loose my data.
Other option would be to get the hard drive removed and copied via a caddy to another pc and then install windows 7 but I dont know how to do this.

What can I do? How can I get my data back? Any advice welcomed thanks.
Many Thanks :)

Use a Vista Recovery Disc to perform a System Restore.

Download and save the Vista Recovery Disc Image to a working computer.
Next, download and install ImgBurn(No need to install the ASK Toolbar. Remove the relevant tick). Burn the Image to Disc. Use this guide(skip step 2b)
Once created, you can use the disc to enter System Restore from the Vista Windows Recovery Environment.

    Make and model of laptop?

I've only tried the safe mode one when starting up; that hasnt worked, I'll try the other safe modes too and see if that'll work.

Its a HP pavillion dv6552ea laptop.

    Thanks for your advice! :)

Could be a damaged sector on the hard drive. Had this prob on my daughter's laptop. Same HP model as yours. Best take it 2 someone who knows what 2 do before it completely crashes. Get them 2 partician the damaged sectors.

Thanks for this advice, any way in which I could do it myself? The guy I spoke to in Maplin said I needa get some sort of caddy to copy my hard drive over.
If the damaged sectors were to eb partitioned, would I be able to get my data back?

Post #3. You can also run ChkDsk from the Windows Recovery Environment. Look at How to use the Command Prompt in the Vista Windows Recovery Environment.

This will check for errors and inconsistencies on your hard drive.

Enter the commands: chkdsk C: /f or chkdsk C: /r

Keep the spaces as I have written them.

Answer Y when chkdsk asks you if you want to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots.
