I cancelled my vodafone contract in August, last DD went out the end of that month. I asked to switch to PAYG, but decided not to buy any vouchers until the phone would stop letting me make calls. Well that 3months ago, and I can still make calls, yet I'm no longer paying for them!!

Is this unusual? Will they come chasing me for the cost of the calls i've been making?

My online Vodafone account has been closed, so I'm confident my contract has stopped, but I'm also unable to dial the PAYG number that tells you your credit balance.

    Any advice?

Sort it out a.s.a.p. The terms and conditions of any telecoms upon cancellation is that all outstanding calls are still chargeable. This clause is used to cover for example if you used your phone abroad and the charge from the other network doesn't come in for a couple of months.

Did you actually cancel your direct debit or did they simply stop taking money out? You could try to continue as you are - the problem is that its not a case of if they find out they're not charging you, its a case of when. Then what will you do?

  • Cancel your DD asap - you have ended your contract, it's just that the correct event has not gone through to the network.

Continue to use it mate, as long as you have it in writing it has ended, I can;t see how they can take any money off you (if they ever find out !!)
  • Hi skdotcom,

I work for Vodafone and, as you'd imagine, it's difficult to know what's actually happening without reviewing your account directly. As others have suggested, the only way to really get an official answer would be to contact Vodafone. If you did want to do this for peace of mind by email it is possible to head over to https://www.vodafone.co.uk, select 'contact us' at the bottom of the screen and send over your details. If you leave the shortcode FIT135 in your email this will route you through to somebody who'll be able to give you full clarification.
  • if they have not sent u a bill then it has classed as finished. they cannot bill you if you dont have an account, otherwise they could charge what they like as you are not in a contract agreement to how much your calls will cost to ehat networks etc. so i would say carry on using it. also, you could easily have moved house or "sold" the phone, so they would not be able to prove it was you that has made the calls as the contract has ended officially there is nothing they can do

surely its vodafones fault as the OP cancelled the account, and vodafone confirmed this in writing,

The OP is still registered to a contractual arrangement, albeit a different one, and is still liable to pay for the usage involved

How am I in a different contractual arrangement. There is no contract!

There certainly seems to be divided opinion on this.
Whilst I agree the sensible route would be to contact vodafone, this will surely result in them starting to charge me for my calls.

I called Vodafone, and first of all the man was sceptical this could happen, but second said you could be in for a nasty shock when you got the bill

Either you will pay for these calls or not. When you made the decision to switch to payg, you expected to pay for your calls. Why is it now such a problem to be presented with that possibility?

After a whole week, why can't you decide what you want to do, instead of any longer wasting the time of people that took the trouble to reply from a range of moral and legal viewpoints?

Completely agree. You are legally entitled to pay back on calls you make. You know that you are defrauding the telephone company therefore you are obtaining goods by deception. As Redux said if you want to continue then go ahead just don't expect people on here to say you should do it or to make you feel better about doing it.

i am grateful for the advice people have spent time adding to this post, but as I said it is conflicting. Of course I am happy to pay for my calls, but surely you must understand me questioning where I stand legally.

Not really sure why this has upset you so much, all I was asking for was balanced advice. I'm not looking for validation for my action (or inaction), I was just interested to hear if people had similar experiences or further information.

I guess you're just jealous as you are having to pay for your calls!!!!!!

errrrm - you've replied more than once with revulsion that any contact you make with Vodafone would result in you paying for your calls, and kept trying to get someone else to get your conscience off the hook

    Sorry, but I don't care.

But if you're happy to resort to boasting about it, I think this thread has reached the end of its useful life.
