Cancelled contract, still able to make calls!

I cancelled my vodafone contract in August, last DD went out the end of that month. I asked to switch to PAYG, but decided not to buy any vouchers until the phone would stop letting me make calls. Well that 3months ago, and I can still make calls, yet I'm no longer paying for them!!

Is this unusual? Will they come chasing me for the cost of the calls i've been making?

My online Vodafone account has been closed, so I'm confident my contract has stopped, but I'm also unable to dial the PAYG number that tells you your credit balance.

Any advice?

Well that would be one way to bring my free calls to an end!

I suppose what I'm asking is, where do I stand legally. Has this happened to anyone else?

sorry i didnt mean to appear so blunt! :)
ive never been in or met anyone in this situation, as far as i can see if youve cancelled the contract, had it in writing, and dont pay direct debits for it then it looks like vodafones c0ck up!!!
they will cotton on eventually though, so make sure you are ready to get started with payg!!
also make sure that they dont just cut you off, and leave you with no service, as you may ring to query and they charge you for the last 'free' 3 months
    good luck!

  • If you continue to use a service that you know you should not and Vodaphone bill you for it then you would be fully liable to pay the charges for the calls you have made.

Your online account may be closed but this doesn't necessarily mean your contract has ended. Online account could just refer to internet access to your bills. Unless you have it in writing that your contract has terminated I would say that you are likely to still be on contract as you also say you can not access the PAYG balance checker number. If they have made a mistake they will probably wave the montly line rental but charge you for the calls at PAYG rates. Personally I would get it sorted, no need to risk a large bill from a mobile company.

I have a letter confirming my request to cancel the contract. I also went into the Vodafone store shortly afterwards to enquire about PAYG vouchers, and got them to bring my account up on screen. It also showed the contract as cancelled.

Thanks for all the replies, but I'm still undecided what to do. Surely there must be someone out there who thinks I should continue, and that i have no obligation to pay for the service they continue to provide...

just make sure you are adament if a bill arrives that you didnt realise your contract is somehow still going and then fight your cause. Also id top up occasionally and then at least you can say well i was topping up and they dont turn round and say well how did u think the phone worked if contract was cancelled!

But they may never find out!

You cancelled the service so you cannot claim ignorance of the fact. As I said if you continue using the service and they billed you you would be legally liable and if you didn't pay you'd risk a poor credit rating and Vodaphone might sell the debt to a recovery service.
Or you may get away with it for ever, who knows...the choice is yours but don't be under any illusion that if Vodaphone come after you that pleading ignorance would provide a workable legal defence.

Didn't you buy a voucher and thought you had recharged it? You ciouldn't be using it for free surely if they confirmed cancellation?
