Quite agree with you - someone, somewhere was funding that Family Allowance! Honestly, there are so many hypocrites on these forums! They bang on about other people being on benefits, when they themselves have taken advantage of benefits of a different kind!

Sounds like they couldn't quite afford their children either, without the help of benefits. Dish out advice regarding contraception, but they still reproduce!

As I have said - family allowance is OK. We have had that for years and it still is here.

I object to my tax being given to families to pay for their sprogs that they couldn't afford to have in the first place.

have you not read any of the thread at all. Are you THAT ignorant of just plain daft.

    Yes I've read the thread.

    No I'm not ignorant.

    Nor am I daft.

I can just see things as they should be, raise the children you can afford to raise! Counting on handouts is a very didgy ground to walk, because there are no guarentees.

If anyone cannot afford to raise 4 children without relying on CTC/CB when their income is 40K plus, then they have their finacial priorities all wrong!

Sorry I don't understand that comment.

We had family allowance and families tofday still get it. I have no grumbles with that.
What I object to is that my tax I pay is being used in Tax Credits to fund other people's sprogs because they cant afford to pay for their own kids.

Either don't have them in the first place or get a better paid job!
But don't come knocking on my door for handouts!!!

You will be pleased to know that they dont need to come knock on your door at all they take it straight out of your paycheck.

    Convienient eh? ;)

    !!!

Because silly @rse family allowance is a benefit.

So you are ok for some benefits to be given out (strangely the ones you got) but different ones are not ok. You are a hypocrite, simple as.

the point was and still is that 2 parents earning 7K each can have more money coming into their houshold than someone on 40K. It is not a case of the 40K people priorotising anything, the question is why are we making 2 x 7K earners as well off as a 40K earner because it can and does happen.

OK, I have paid tax and still am for over 47 years! My wife has never worked - it was her job to look after the family and the home. If we needed more money I did another job. If that didn't work out I changed my job. My education stopped at 15 when I went out to work full time.
I paid for my children and kept my wife out of my wage. She received family allowance, which she put in the Post Office every week for when the kids grew up! So not a damn penny of government money went into my kids other than what I provided.

Yet I am now a pensioner, still paying tax and EXPECTED to fund everybody else's sprogs!!

What gets me is that family allowance is still here - that's fine, but the poster has the audacity to ask what can she get with a family income of over £50 grand by way of Tax Credits!!!

You did get tax credits. They were called something else then. It was automatically credited to your wages.

But you didn't just have family allowance, as was pointed out earlier you also had "child tax allowance" and also "married couples tax allowance". These were worth a considerable amount of money, but many people don't seem to have even noticed that they were receiving them!! Child tax/family allowance together were worth more than child benefit is nowadays.

Most countries still have tax allowances for chilren and people seem a lot more tolerant towards something phrased as a tax allowance, rather than calling it a benefit. I recently read that British familes where one parent stays at home now pay more tax than any other western country.

Well at the moment I've got one child, and one on the way, and right now I want to spend time being a mom. However once my two go to school, I'd like to do the second year of my A-Levels (have already got AS levels in Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Religious Studies and General studies) and then hopefully go on to study Particle Physics and Cosmology, but it will be a while before I have the time or the money to be able to do that :/

Take a look at foundation routes - you get full student support, whereas with a-levels it's more off your own back. You should get help with childcare too, unless your partner earns a high amount of money. Many degrees are not "full-time" - some only require 4-6 hours a week attendance on campus so you could still be a Mum and study in the evenings once they are in bed. Good luck!:)

No I am not. My family got family allowance which we chose to save for the kids and not spend it on trinkets and toys! I paid for everything my children and wife ever needed.

Today they get family allowance the same, AND then they get more money in other benefits.

If I could manage to bring a family up on one wage without the help of benefits, so should the OP!
