TESCO...Is this discrimination??
Comments

It would be discrimination if they refused to sell you the boys' bike on the grounds that a girl will ride it. But you do have the option to buy the boys' bike.
That said, even if it isn't discrimination, it is a bit mean.:(Debt £26k 18/10/140 -

The girls bikes might be selling well and they might still have a warehouse full of the boys ones, hense the offer.
Shows you how much markup there is though, that they can just cut the price in half..."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

I obviously misunderstood. I thought the bikes were identical ie take them out of their packaging and they are exactly the same.weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0

My mistake... I thought this would be the place to come for accurate information and advice, not sarcasm and ridicule.. Thank you though to the one or two posters who seem to understand my point.0

We all understood your point, and it was wrong
Tesco are not being discriminatory in any fashion by pricing items differently.

I understand the concept of supply and demand and I agree they haven't on paper done anything wrong.
But if you (hypothetically) had two teenage siblings who had saved their pocket money and paper round money to buy themselves a bike, the sister would need to save twice as long to get the same bike as her brother, just because she might want it in pastel colours.
Maybe it's because it is a child's product that it is a bit jarring, especially if as you say, they are making such a bit profit on each one.Debt £26k 18/10/140 -

I agree with your reasoning, but the same thing applies to clothing, branded stationary etc. None of it is discriminatory, but purely down to personal choice.Gone ... or have I?0 -
I don't know why the retailer doesn't just market them by colour - if the blue one is more expensive than the turquoise one, then that's down to supply and demand. Personally I am somewhat bemused by the consumer's willingness to bow to the retailer's diktat that 'blue is for boys and turquoise is for girls' - it's not even traditional!!!
But seriously, this happens all the time - recently on Amazon, the kidizoom cameras were priced differently for pink and blue. I bought the blue one for my niece as it was the cheaper option. She was delighted with it, so win-win.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
Sorry if you didn't want to hear it, but the bikes are NOT identical. Sure, they are very similar with the only real difference being the colour - but there is a difference. If one colour is more popular than another, then the price will go up. The fact that it is a colour preferred by one gender is irrelevant.
Legally, they can absolutely do this, however I agree that morally it seems wrong. Not a lot you can do about it though, apart from buy the cheaper bike and paint it yourself!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
