I wouldn't lie if I were you - if found out, you'd have to pay the whole lot back. If you're on a limited budget, that could be crippling.

Is your wife signed up to any survey sites or other similar pocket money-paying online activities? If so, strictly she should be declaring those on a tax return anyway, which would honestly make her up to the 30 hours.

Good idea. I'll look into this.
  • Actually thinking about it you probably will be ok. I work 17.5 hours and they told me to round it up to nearest hour so I always put 18. Worth a phone call I think to clarify.

On the flip side, I work 27 1/2 hours per week and was told by HMRC to round it down to 27 hours, 'as their system will only recognise whole hours and it is not possible to input fractions of hours'.

Definitely worth a call to tax credits.

if she's a civil servant, i see major problems with her asking for the extra 20 minutes to be taken off her lunch time!

right now they are paying no overtime..........just using the flexi time to recoup and additional hours worked.
if your wife is dropping to 4 days, there is no reason at all for you not to get a part time job is there?
  • Hi everyone. My wife is going to drop a day and work 4 days a week.

This will bring her hours down to 29 hours and 40 minutes.

Does anyone know if this can be rounded up to 30 hours as this would entitle us to around an extra £700 a year in working tax credits.

    Many Thanks

Can't you get a part time job on the weekend to make up the hours?
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

I might just do that at some point but it would mean losing my Home Responsibilities contributions.
    Why would it?
  • sounds to me like they want to work as little as poss to claim as much as poss.

Thanks so much for your insightful contribution.
You have no idea of our background or reasons why we have chosen this work arrangement.
Do you think it's fair if you are 20 minutes under the threshold you lose £700?
Sounds to me like you want to think as little as poss to talk as much as poss.

    That's what we where thinking.

I would have to start paying my National Insurance again.

regarding working 17.5 hours to 18...

i assume you already qualify for working 16 hours?
as you already qualify it makes little difference.

the OP is rounding it up 'in order' to qualify.............big difference!
