I have been on pay as you go forever as I am only a light user but I have found that I can get thru £10 credit a month now and I have seen some sim only deals for £10 which give some minutes and texts so I am planning on going on one as it will be cheaper and I'll get more use. However I am a mobile phone novice and I want to keep my number so how do I go about this (currently vodaphone) and is it straight forward, does anyone have any recommendations of how to go about this?

    How to keep the number?
Port it to whatever network you want like the first thread I quoted explains.

Ring vodafone and ask for a PAC code, this will allow you to transfer your number to another network.

Sign up with Giff Gaff which is part of O2, and is part payg and part contract.
When your number has ported over look at Quidco and see which sim only deal has the best cashback.

At the moment you can get £90 back on a £15/month Vodafone deal giving 300 minutes unlimited texts and 50MB which will work out at £7.50/month over 12 months

    1) You can call vodafone on 191 (from your handset) and ask for the PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code).
    2) Then order and activate your new sim card, for example from giffgaff.com, who give a good deal for the £10 a month goodybag. (250 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited web)
    3) Once your sim is active, you can fill in the "transfer your number" form on the giffgaff.com website with your PAC code.
It normally takes about a day to transfer the number.
  • If you went onto a sim-only one month rolling contract a few months ago you could have got the same tesco deal as I'm on.
    500 min
    5000 texts
    500 mb internet
All for £10 a month. Like GiffGaff it also uses 02's network, but go with giffgaff and you can get a similar thing but with 250 minutes only.

Proberly depends what your going to be using your phone for

    Lots of texting
Loads of internet use (giffgaff proberly best bet here)
If your can get your mates or other half to use GiffGaff its free for GiffGaff to GiffGaff calls.
Also GiffGaff lets you call 0800 numbers for free

PAC code is all you need to transfer your number

If your phones unlocked more choice
