Sorry, I'm gonna jump in on this post. We live in a semi-detached house and there is a fence that separates our house with our neighbours in the back gardens. We bought nearly 4 yrs ago and these neighbours have been renting for just over a year.
There are gaps in the fence. It's just the type of fence it is. Our neighbours can see into our garden and vice versa. We really want to get some privacy to enjoy our own garde, especially as I'll be 7 mths pregnant in the summer months. We were going to get fence panels and put them up against our side of the fence (we have the fence posts on our side), being careful not to go any higher than the original fence . I'm now a bit worried that we won't be able to do this. Any thoughts

Our next door neighbours had the same privacy issue after they did an extension which involved removing an oil tank and exposing their patio area. They put up their own fence with posts on their side.
I don't think you are entitled to use the neighbour's posts without permission. You could contact the owner of the house next door and discuss it.

    Thanks for your reply.

I can understand that but the fence posts are not our neighbours either and they are set in our garden.

If they are in your garden then they are your's. From your initial post I got the impression that they just faced onto your garden but were not across the boundary.

So anyhow my sister arranged to get a nice new fence put up on her side of the boundary. Very tidy workmanship by the guy that did it. Anyhow it stands that bit taller than her cranky neighbours fence so thats got to look good from his side!
Personally i'm going to tell her to "whistle while she works" when she starts painting it just to annoy him even more :T

My little sister bought her first house about a year ago.
Anyhow her backgarden area is seperated from her neighbours by a wooden panel fence.
The previous owners hadn't really bothered much with painting but my sister trying to tidy the place up a bit started painting her side of the fence only to be told off by her tattooed neighbour "hey love what do you think your doing, this is my fence, you put up your own fence if you want to paint it"
I think i can see why the previous owners hadn't bothered with the hassle of trying to paint their side.
My sister told them she was only painting her side and it was protecting the wood anyhow.
What are peoples opinions on this?

If she does put up her own fence can she put up a fence that is just that little bit higher than the one her awkward neighbour seems to dote on?
I found this site which might be of some help to you. planningportal its a .gov site. It gives info on erecting fences etc.You might even find information on your local council website.....if your lucky.Your little sis could ring the council to find out the ins and outs of it.

If you are encouraging your sister to annoy her neighbour, remember she is the one who is going to have to live beside him.

Are people forgetting that the sister was in the wrong at the start of this by painting his fence?

She wasn't doing any harm whatsoever painting her side of the fence that sat on her boundary side. He just wanted to show that he was the big man next door.
Well his big-man complaining has landed him with a nice new fence (that is taller than the original boundary fence) to sit and look at. :T
