Left a Temp job with Reed - No Notice?

Hi all
This is the first time I have posted in this category so please be nice!:o
I just want some info really! On Monday morning, I woke up and decided I didnt want to work at my temporary job. I had been unhappy for a few weeks previous to making the decision and I had emailed my consultant at Reed saying that I was unhappy but she never really made any concious effort to help me. My boss was basically ringing Reed having a go about me taking time off due to my IBS which is no fault of my own and also she was saying that they peope who cover me when I was off sick were doing my job faster than I was. I don't see how this is possible as I was working SO hard!
I don't remember anyone ever having said to me that I have to give any notice? I know that it is 'polite' to give a weeks notice but this was a extremely large company and I know for a fact that they have ALREADY managed to get one of the previous temps, who left at the end of March, back in to take over my position. I didn't do it to leave them in the lerch!!!
I emailed my consultant at Reed last night saying that I still wish to be considered for other roles at the company where I worked and she emailed me back saying that Reed wouldnt consider putting me forward for any other positions at the company as they will ask my manager for an update and she wouldn't recommend me to any other managers. Bit harsh, no?
Really would appreciate ANY advice anyone has! If any temps that are temping through Reed are reading this, can you please dig out your contract for me as I haven't got mine so I can't see if there's anything on there about giving notice!
Thank you!

No...Not harsh. Not giving notice is rude and completely stupid.
A few questions.
Did your Reed consultant or the manager you were temping for know about your health problems? (before you say anything I have IBS along with FMS, HMS & M.E.)
Did you tell your consultant that you were not happy with where you were?
How can you expect a manager's recommendation if you just walked out?
What makes you think you don't need to give notice in a temp position?
The fact they got another temp is not relevent. You did not let them know. You gave no notice.
Would you not think that someone leaving a job with no notice (i.e. walking out) could show a degree of unreliability and would you place someone who did that in another position?
Bearing in mind that it is Reed's reputation on the line?0 -

I can't see why this is harsh, sorry. Once bitten, twice shy and all that. Why would you expect to be put forward for other roles when you have failed to turn up for one of them/they claim your replacement/s are better at the role than you were?
Granted, you couldn't help the absence due to IBS, but if (as it sounds), you didn't bother to show up and haven't gone back in since, I'm not surprised your consultant is wary. After all, there's a relationship between businesses and recruiters and they don't want to get a reputation for putting forward duds. In fact, I once got offered a job through an agency, subsequently declined to take it and they said they wouldn't consider me for any role in future - they can be a grumpy bunch!Really would appreciate ANY advice anyone has
Don't leave a job without giving notice - did it myself a few times as a student and I regret it. You end up with a patchy employment history and it's very hard to get together decent references. Trust me, I know how hard it can be to stick with a dull/stressful job, but the harsh reality is that you can't really afford to leave one job before you have the next secured. If any temps that are temping through Reed are reading this, can you please dig out your contract for me as I haven't got mine
Why not ask them for another copy?0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone but I guess posting this on here was wrong.
I know what I did wasn't exactly professional but why should I stay in a TEMPORARY role when. 1. My contract was due to end in the next few months so would have had to leave anyway and 2. When my boss was talking about me behind my back? Now I know for a fact that that shouldn't happen, whether I was a temp or not.
I've had several agencies call me saying I have an excellent CV and also have a brilliant job agency lined up who are working extremely hard to find me another position. I'm not the first person to leave a job and not give notice! I also have a meeting in Bristol next week and hope to start a job in Bath soon after if I can get the money together to get to Bristol.
..Thanks anyway but I don't need people being rude. Just advice. Thanks!

I tried to give you some sensible advice and offer some sympathy for your IBS etc. but that obviously wasn't enough. If you're wanting people to agree with you completely without trying to think about things from the point of view of a potential employer, you're better off discussing the matter with friends.
Glad you've found a new agency, but please don't develop a reputation as a 'job jumper', as word gets around.
Also, as this is an anonymous forum, you might like to consider changing your avatar if (as I suspect) the photo is you

Did your Reed consultant or the manager you were temping for know about your health problems? (before you say anything I have IBS along with FMS, HMS & M.E.) Yes they did. I told them when I had a sick day when I used to work there in the past (last year).
Did you tell your consultant that you were not happy with where you were? Yes I did, as I stated above, I emailed my consultant several times and explained that I wasnt happy and I wanted to be moved to another temp position or a permenant role. She never got back to me.
What makes you think you don't need to give notice in a temp position? Because I'm pretty sure I never signed anything saying that I have to give any notice.0 -

It's fine. I do want advice.
Yes, they seem to be better suited to me and understand my point of view. Do you think maybe an email to my old boss might help? At least then I can explain? (To some degree)
No, won't get that reputation. I want a stable job where I can settle down and use all my skills I have learnt in the past.
Whats wrong with having my pic up? Yes it is me but I didn't see any problem with that. Thanks for the advice so far.0 -

A polite email to your old line manager might be an idea, but if you don't get any answer/they seem frosty, try not to be too surprised.Whats wrong with having my pic up? Yes it is me but I didn't see any problem with that
As I say, it's an essentially anonymous internet forum. I don't recommend having your real picture as people can associate your real life problems with your face. For example, people discuss job complaints, divorces and their financial lives on this site - do you really want anyone being able to link you to your screen name?
It's very hard to vent when people know who you are and you risk upsetting people/making things hard for yourself. *A lot* of people browse these forums, it's wise to be careful (and anonymous)
*Edit: from the combination of your screen name/pic, we now know/can take a reasonable stab at your real name, age and we know what you look like.... I wouldn't want strangers knowing that sort of information about me!*0 -

Okay thanks, I had thought about is as I do think I did a very good job whilst I was working there (obviously I won't say that in the email as that won't go down well I suspect!)
I still don't understand but I will look into changing my pic:o. I just didn't think it was a problem as I only talk on the debt free wannabee and this is my first post on this section. Cheers for the help so far. I will let you know if I hear anything back from my boss!0 -
