Well the email has been sent.
I think I'll just forget I ever wrote anything on here to be honest. I have faith I will find another position so don't need people bringing me down on here (which obviously I am going to get from some people!)
Thanks to edinburgher for the help anyway!

I used to work for a recruitment company, and that kind of thing was just plain embarrassing for our consultants when it happened (up there with not turning up to an interview!). There's no way we'd have ever considered using someone again who just walked out on an assignment. There are far more people out there who are desperate to work, whatever the environment. And I'm not justifying nor condemning anything the manager did or didn't do, but there are better ways to have handled it.

And as far as 'talking behind your back', weekly calls between line managers & recruitment consultants are fairly standard - they are just giving/receiving feedback about you, I guess you wouldn't have been against it had it been glowing?!

Well do you know what. I AM desperate to work. But not in an enviroment that I am not happy in. I have rent and bills and a loan to pay for so I am definately trying my hardest now to get back into work. I live in a good town where temp jobs come up quite regularly.
  • I understand why the recruitment agency won't want to use you again, you left them in the lurch. I also understand you just leaving.

I've done a few bits of work through temp agencies, some were good and some were bad. I left my last one with no notice, I spent one day there and realised they'd sent me for something way above my capabilities (so i was mad at them too)...went home crying that night and never went back. I was scared and had zero confidence to a) do the job and b) go back with my tail between my legs and explain that I no longer wanted to do it. It's unprofessional and rude but I actually felt like I'd rather drive my car in to a wall than go back.
Trying to spread calmness, understanding and optimism on MSE :)

I've done the same myself - lasted all of 4 days as a pension administrator (with maybe 45 minutes of training from a 17 year old lad in a suit that didn't fit him) before being told that I would be let loose on actual pension records. I picked up my coat and walked out the door.

Feel pretty bad that I walked out, but then again I didn't expect the company that I left to offer me a job in future!
  • I have been in temp jobs and jobs that I hated but I would never just not go in without at least saying that I wasn't going to be at work, it's just plain bad manners.

How would you have felt if you'd turned up for work and been sent home and told you weren't wanted that day?

Actually, what I failed to say in the original post is that I DID email the recruitment agency at 7:30am on Monday morning explaining my decision and that I wouldn't be at work. My boss then called the lady at Reed and asked where I was......all because no1 checked their emails.

Wow..someone who actually understands :) Thank you. I do understand that it was unprofessional and rude but I DID let them know way before I was due to go into work so it's fair to say at least they had some notice I suppose. I also felt scared that I couldn't really speak to my boss about it (hence emailing the lady at Reed all the time....but she never helped me out and didn't bother looking for anything else for me).

From experience this has happened to me on 2 occasions and I guess still happens regularly for temporary staff turning up to work and then being told they are not wanted.

Both times the agencies concerned, refused to pay me anything for turning up and wasting my time, probably due to the fact they were so far up their clients backside and didn't want to upset them. They both refused blank to invoice their client for wasting my time.

That sounds like the company that I was working for (or should I say, the recruitment company!) They were (and still are!) the only recruitment agency that the company I worked for use. So I guess they are brown-nosing the company I used to work for a bit!

I am quite lucky in that my manager has still authorised my timesheet so I will get the money that I earnt for when I worked last week so thats good.

    I completely sympathise.

I did the same this week. I started a job a fortnight ago and the manager took an instant dislike to me. Now I've been a manager in five-star restaurants, but this woman would talk to me like I was a sixteen year old off the street. I've ran larger teams in busier environments, so you would think she would have utilised me more, but no, she insisted on me washing dishes for eight hours a day. Now, I don't mind doing dishes, and I said so when I challenged her. What I do mind is working my !!! off when there are others standing around chatting to each other.

The last straw was happened last Thursday, the place had a power cut. So what did they do? Pile all the customers into the cafe and charged them £1.80 for a cup of instant coffee using the kettle in the staffroom. I saw so many food hygiene violations [opening fridges, serving soup from kettles which had no power.] When I left on Saturday, I knew I wasn't going back. The cheek was that the place believed it was 5*, all I would say is that I've worked in better places who had 3*.
