You are quite right. It isn't a popularity contest. You thank people if the reader believes you have added something to the discussion that has helped them.

So an example would be giving advice, ideas, adding deals, being courteous etc.

That's not popularity, that is merely giving to the thread, rather than disrupting it.

I've been buying the Phileas Fogg - but not tried these. Do these work as well?
