    I found the above on a JRT forum. Maybe you could try looking on there OP. They will probably have lots of advice and tips.

    The OP didn't want tips - they wanted someone to validate the decision they'd already made.

    Not going to do it unless the animal, also a member of your family, is at least health checked in case there's some blooming obvious reason WHY before you sign his death warrant.

    As the OP hasn't been back, I expect you may be right. Which bodes ill for the unfortunate dog.

    One of my dogs came to me because he bit a child. It turned out that the kid had been torturing the dog for weeks; I took the animal straight to the vet who found a pen-top jammed into the dog's ear, plus lots of stab wounds in the ear which was full of pus. That the parents hadn't noticed was a disgrace - the dog did not deserve to die because of their neglect. Even after everything the child must have done to it; when the dog eventually turned, he only broke the skin in one place although the boy's arm was bruised.

    The dog is now terrified of all children under about the age of seven. We have a secure kennel and run where he goes whenever grandchildren or friends with little ones visit. I never let him off the lead at the park, the beach, anywhere we might encounter small children - because I can't trust him not to react badly if they want to touch him (doesn't help that he is a really beautiful, cuddly-looking dog). It is not easy, but in every other way he's a fantastic dog and I've never for a single moment regretted taking him on.

    Unfortunately, there aren't many people around who are willing or able to provide a safe environment for a dog with a history of biting.

    In the OP's situation I would get in touch with a JR rescue group, and I wish her luck in finding the little fella a new home.

    I got bitten by a JRT when I was about 6. It was my step-fathers parents dog. Horrible little thing. It was my sister, my Mum and I in the room and they all heard the wailing and came rushing back in to see what the matter was. I was pouring blood onto the plastic covering their sofa :(. Apparently it was my fault according to the Mother. She screeched "She must have been tormenting my poor baby, she never bites". Now my Mother was not the kind of person to stick up for me ever but she was insistant that it was not my fault. She pointed out that I had actually not moved, I was sitting completely still and the dog just leapt up and bit me.
    Thankfully the womans husband had a bit more sense and compassion and the dog was never allowed near us again. She was always put outside or in another room. I think that it was all the spouses of the woman's children going mad which helped. I still hate JRTs. I'm better with other dogs now but still very nervous. Shame because we had dogs ourselves when I was smaller :(

    I thought I'd better join in with all the JRT bashing by respected breeders and dog behaviourists on this thread;

    I had a JRT and it bit me on the leg but I thought I probably provoked it somehow and thought nothing of it. I begun to get suspicious though when the dog bought a subscription to Soldier Of Fortune magazine. I became alarmed after he bought a high powered rifle....once a biter always a biter I thought.

    The dog eventually left home after I caught him trying to sniper me and last I heard he had joined Al-Qaeda.
  • Peachyprice - I find it amusing that you seem to be only ripping into my posts for disagreeing with the OP's decision and yet someone can post a picture of a dog looking sorry and saying "im a good doggy please dont kill me" and nada is said lol You might want to re-read the thread, im not the only one disagreeing. :p

    Why tar every JRT with the same brush?

    You know what has really peed me off about this thread? that so many posters seem to think its the kids who should be rehomed! Advice about monitoring the kids and dogs 24/7 (yeah, I can hover over the kids and dog - just dont expect me to leave the room and cook or go pee). Taking the little biter to the vet - MY vet would just have put it down - She didnt trust animals if they had bitten. or even - and I thought this was classic 'The dog was there before the kids'! so the kids are fault even if they didnt DO anything?
    I love dogs, I love my kids too, but, in the scheme of things if my kids get hurt then whoever hurt them doesnt get a second chance! Maybe I was lucky with my dogs - but I really think its because the dogs KNEW exactly where they were in my family - I didnt have to deal with a dog biting one of my kids! those of you who are excusing your dogs biting tendencies are NOT doing your dogs any favours. a dog who bites a family member is a dog who thinks its pack leader!

    Simple - Put the dog outside/lock in another room and take the kid to the toilet with you :)

    I missed the comment about "the dog was here before the kids" :rotfl:

    You might want to re-read which of your posts I've 'ripped into'. I only quoted your posts that were highly inaccurate in that you were saying things were written that weren't, no other reason and nothing to do with my views on dogs who bite children or the way your dog fits into your family. :p
