I hope that works - but it may not. Recurring payments from a debit card are not the same as a direct debit or standing order. Martin has a guide here:

I also got the same letter 18/11/11, it stated I owed £113.68. When I rang the company I foolishly confirmed my date of birth etc, only to be told this account was from 1998!! I said until they could actually prove i hadnt paid for items not to contact me again...they said they couldnt. Afterward I panicked about the details i had disclosed and that they now had my mobile number...I rang o2, they confirmed it was a private home telephone number...panicked a little more and rang my bank, their bank, and finally the police fraud dept! Advice from police and bank was to watch bank account and contact the consumer council. I am worried now that these people could damage my credit rating. Legally can companies demand money after nearly 13 years??
  • thank you for your help, now i am hoping that my letter i have sent to MKRR will settle this matter once and for all.

and i will act on all your comments regarding future payments from MKRR - i can not beleive that this is still going on, i thought i was very clued up, but seems i am not - like all others that have received these letters chasing debt from 13 years ago, disturbing to see its not just me that panic's
  • It seems these scam artists are still at it.
My now wife received the same letter as the OP(including the 04-10-10 date) in her maiden name dated 18-11-11 for £106 odd.
We ignored the original letter since it didn't make any sense however we've now received a 2nd letter today threatening to continue to harass us by post & telephone(no calls yet) until WE resolve this matter.
My wife is waiting for a telephone call just so she can scream blue murder at them.
In the past she has had a Littlewoods account which was cleared and closed down. She has a current GUS(now KandCo) account which is in VERY good order and always has been for a good number of years. She called KandCo today and they have no knowledge of this supposed debt.
We await their next move with great anticipation...

Can I just state cancelling your credit card may not stop the debt being taken. Speak to your bank and see what they can do about this!
  • Hi all,

i followed comemnts that have been given on this forum, i sent MKRR a letter saying that this debt was settleded many years ago and used the letter template from here and MKRR only responded with sending me a payment card as i changed my debit card so hopefully they could not take any more money from my account, as i was stupid enough to give them my debit card details and paid £5, i paniced basically, i sent them a stature barred letter (template from here) as well, as this debt was 13 years old and i had already paid it off in full, and OMG i thought they had taken another payment from my account, i was fuming, so i called the bank to ask them to treat it as fruad, as the bank said while laughing "they have paid the money in to the account and not taken it out" i said opsss i just saw the company name (compello corp) and £5.00 and called you, so they have refunded my money back so the 2 letters i sent did the trick, so dont give up, fight all the way .

a big thankyou for all your help :)

Wow this thread touched a nerve. It seems these people are on a roll.
Well, since I posted this thread I wrote to these people asking them to prove I owed this money and guess what? I've not heard a thing from them since.
Just goes to show, if you stick to yoiur guns, ask them to prove it and add a small threat of legal action they disappear into thin air!
Thanks for all the replys and especially to the person who advised me to write to these clowns.

You're entitled to ignore it - the original creditor has told you that nothing is owing.

But frankly you'd be doing us all a favour if you put this to MKDP in writing, requiring their final response within 8 weeks as you intend to refer the matter to Trading Standards, OFT and FOS.

This bunch ought to be fined at the least, and preferably have their licence revoked.

Yes, Sarah, thanks for starting this thread and alerting us to this bunch. It was Fermi that gave you the original advice and at that time I had never heard of them. I have now!

My considered opinion is in the post above.
  • Hi everyone,

I received a letter today from Shop Direct Finance Company Limited to contact them regarding my K&Co account. However, I have never heard of K&Co and I couldn't possibly have had an account with them. What is concerning me as well is that Shop direct did a credit search 2 days ago that is appearing on my credit report as well. I haven't had the chance to contact Equifax or Shop Direct yet but I'm concerned. I'm thankful I came accros this forum and realised that i'm not alone. Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
