i used to do plastic canvas (NOT tea cosies and tissue box cover either  ) and i went through a lot of yarn, seem to remember worsted mentioned a lot, didn't mean much to me though :rotfl:

hey, my mil lives in dunoon, in fact my dd is spending the weekend there with her now. there is a lovely store in dunoon that sells american goodies, was that where you bought the pinto beans?? (not sure i would call it a health food store, given all the american convenience food  :rotfl: )
Hiya HOL --- I live near Peterhead and have been over here for almost 7 years as well.Where are you located?
Here's another coincidence....my in-laws live in Dunoon too! I know the store that you mean with the American convenience food -- I think that it's called The Olive Tree. The health food store is down the road a bit (near Bell's).
OOoh, that's a great tip about freezing the soaked beans...I shall have to do that! Thanks!0 -

LOL....ok, if that was the case, I would totally freak out too. Nope, I grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh area) and then lived in Tucson, Arizona until I came over here in 1999.

Hello, I've been 'lurking' for a while now. This is a great thread, thanks for the translations from out american speaking posters!
In some recipes it asks for 'instant vanilla pudding'. Can I substitute angel delight? If so, how much do I need? Thanks in advance.0 -
I love the corn bread when i go to America and I have noticed someone on here mention Polenta is it the same as 'Corn meal'?
Thank youjulybride

I know this is more of an american conversion thread but could someone describe what *brown sauce* is most like. We have tomato sauce & bbq sauce but I have a recipe that has brown sauce in it. It's a UK recipe. What would you substiute it for?Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0

I think that Polenta and Cornmeal are the same. I buy cornmeal from Asda in Leicester in the 'indian' section.0

I hope someone else comes along and answers this for you AussieLass because I cant for the life of me think of anything that could subsitute brown sauce - do you have any other kind of table sauce out there. Have you ever tasted English brown sauce?
I will watching this thread avidly to see what other peope come up with.0 -
Do you have steak sauce? It's not really the same but it's closer than anything else I can think of. My recollection is that brown sauce is somewhat sweeter than steak sauce (e. HP sauce).
