In regards to saltines, I can buy these in bags at my asian foodstore. They are all individually packed and there's abot 12 - 18 packs in a large bag. Last time I bought them I think they were about £2.50

can't help you with that one either i'm afraid, i never liked them when i was in the states, even as a kid! course i didn't like kool-aid either but mostly because people put too much sugar in it it's actually nice made with apple juice instead of water and half the sugar, gives cheap apple juice nice flavour varities cheaply wouldn't mind seeing it here but i don't give dd much juice anymore because it's so hard on her teeth

    anyway, i'm rambling!

    yes, butter!

i always use butter in place of shortening, it's a helluva lot healthier than shortening and tastes better too!

Having tried Saltines over in the states I think the nearest you can get over here are "Matzos" crackers which I have seen up to about 10" square and you can break them up. They are pretty tasteless though!

matzos (jewish kosher crackers really) are nowhere near the same as saltines, for one thing they don't have any salt on top but you're right they are fairly bland

in the states you can get tined corn beef hash which is corn beef with chunks of new potato in, very nice. you can of course make your own easily enough, THAT served on Matzos is the bees knees!

saltines are light crispy, bubbly on top and are salted (thus SALTines) they are actually really nice just with butter on but they are used as a very basic cracker and are good with peanut butter, cheese etc

Hiya RacyRed -- I was able to find pinto beans at Tesco. It took some hunting, but they were in the organic food section. If memory serves me right, it's about 75p or so for a 400g tin.

    Hope that this helps!

i believe they are selling them dried now too. they have this endcap in some stores full of plain clear bags with black writing, think it's like generic wholefoods or something

anyway they sell bulghar wheat and various pulses that way so you might find pinto beans too.

if you're in edinburgh or glasgow you can definately find them at lupe pinto's but they're far too expensive i find. i get mine from the ethnic grocers and while they are more expensive than many beans they are far far cheaper there than anywhere else! i think 2kg is about £2.79

Hey HOL -- I'll have to check for the dried pinto beans! Thanks for the heads up! :D

By chance, have you seen canned black beans anywhere around? I was able to find them at a health food store in Dunoon and stocked up then....but I'm starting to run low! I've seen the dried black beans at Tesco (in Aberdeen), but sometimes it's just easier to have the cans around.

Thanks for all of the great work that you do on the board!

you're quite welcome! what part of scotland are you in sedona?

i know you can get dried black beans at most ethnic grocers (chinese, indian etc) i've seen tinned black beans there occasionally as well. actually i see dried black beans all the time now though they were pretty scarce 7 years ago when i first came to scotland. if you're in the remoter areas of scotland you will have to search a bit more i suppose though even when we lived on skye i could find some 'odd things' like tahinni, vegan goods, bulk polenta, bulk sunflower seeds and sultanas etc at this wee place in dunvegan, looked like an old shed, had no sign (we just called it 'tony's' after the owner) it was a little treasure trove, and especially so on skye, so you never know you may well find a place even if it seems unlikely!

lupe pintos will probably have them though

hey, my mil lives in dunoon, in fact my dd is spending the weekend there with her now. there is a lovely store in dunoon that sells american goodies, was that where you bought the pinto beans?? (not sure i would call it a health food store, given all the american convenience food  :rotfl: )

a tip for beans. soak them overnight then freeze them. freezing the wet beans causes ice to form inside which breaks down the cellular walls. so when you thaw them out half your work is done for you and you don't have to cook them so long

however, DO NOT freeze cooked beans unless you want mush, i found this out the hard way! (well if you wanted refried beans it would be a boon i suppose!)
