I am now the proud owner of a USA cup measure so that I can make some of the lovely USA recipes I've got...BUT someone at work today told me that USA teaspoon and tablespoon sizes are different from ours, so does anyone know what the difference is or can I buy a set of USA measuring spoons......and in a USA recipe, does a small t stand for teasponn and a capital T for tablespoon or am I guessing wrongly?

there is a small difference BUT it's very small and will only affect the most precise recipes (like atom bombs and such like  :rotfl: ) i use plain old measuring spoons from the uk in all my recipes and don't have any problems with them ;)

  • I was in a popeyes in new york recently and had the chicken and biscuits! Lovely, I preferred the KFC ones but didn't like the clones of them.
I mainly use US recipes because I can just chuck a cup of this and that in instead of the weighing out.

    Hiya HOLsale,

Are Pinto beans the same as aduki beans or red kidney beans or something altogether different?

I need to start making my own refried beans.

    Thanks

Hiya RacyRed -- I was able to find pinto beans at Tesco. It took some hunting, but they were in the organic food section. If memory serves me right, it's about 75p or so for a 400g tin.

    Hope that this helps!

I'm hoping you know about yarn. I'm trying to find out what "double knitting" would be in USA terms. Is it "Sport" or "Fingering" or what?

    Thanks

Not a question Holsale, just thought you'd be interested to know that Tesco are now selling Miracle Whip.

For those who don't know this is an ingredient that is sometimes called for in US recipes. It is a salad cream/fake mayonnaise. When you read the ingredients list it sounds vile tbh.It makes me wonder how many other less desirable US convenience foods are going to appear on our supermarket shelves-Cool Aid? We've already got Pop Tarts and Hot Pockets.

No offence intended Holsale, but I'd rather see more cornmeal and pinto beans around than these sorts of things ;)

Mind you British food manufacturers can come up with enough 'homegrown'(if that's the right expression) rubbish- just look at Lunchables and cheesestrings.
    Rant over :)

cool, miracle whip! salad creme just never tasted quite like miracle whip!

and i had no idea they sold hot pockets! just goes to show i don't buy stuff like that any more! i may have to have one for old times sake though!

they have lunchables in the states, they had them at least 10 years ago! but that dairylea stuff the little triangles, vile! course so is american cheese slices

wouldn't mind seeing velveeta though, it's soft yellow cheese that comes in a square blob in foil and a box. it's not incredibly healthy but it makes the best mac and cheese ever LOL

i agree both countries have far too much yucky convenience foods but they're nice occasionally

thanks for the tip by the way ;)
