Yes, unfortunately (just kidding - sort of). I'm English, married to an American, but I get home 4 or 5 times a year (home? - I've only lived in the US for 22 years!). You know that expression that starts "neither fish, nor fowl.."? That's me.

Aha,the pa stands for Pennsylvania does it? Do you stock up on marmite and Branston pickle when you're back here? :rotfl:0

Marmite yes, pickle no. My suitcase is normally filled with Cadbury's chocolate (which my american born children have a strong preference for). Last time I came in I estimated my "candy" purchase on the customs form to be in excess of $100 which is a LOT of chocolate (although it did include Easter eggs)! The thing I really miss is sausages. I make them myself but no matter how I try (and I've tried the recipes linked here) I just can't get them right. Great pity because my American DH's favourite dish is, believe it or not, toad in the hole.

What is onion powder - can i use onion granules instead? thanks!0

In regards to saltines, I can buy these in bags at my asian foodstore. They are all individually packed and there's abot 12 - 18 packs in a large bag. Last time I bought them I think they were about £2.50

He's trained well - pity about the children!
Onion powder is ground dessicated onions. I imagine that onion granules are for onion gravy? With a thickener incorporated? I don't think that would work so well. Personally, I don't much care for the taste of onion power, so I generally just replace it with finely chopped onions, although I suppose that would depend on what you were making.

thanks, a lot of the onion powder is for dry mixes so I couldn't really substitute the onions as I want to keep them in the store cupboard -I have no trouble findiong garlic powder but onion powder seems very elusive!0
