OP There are enough cases of people who have recieved money they weren't entitled to (ie paid into their bank accounts by mistake) who have gone to prison for keeping and spending it, and for £22K I think they will pursue you.

thank you for this could you please provide details of these cases?

    A BBC news article

This one is susended sentence for him and a community order for her.

And given a friend of mine was pursued for an overpayment of his salary and that was no where near £22K

the above two cases are very large sums of money 100k+ in both instances. i dont think my situation applies here.

i accept that they may chase me to court over this, and forced id like to make a repayment of a nominal amount every month - any idea what the lowest i could go for would be, bearing in mind i am out of work now and on JSA.

OP could quite legally be on contribution based JSA

So. How can they find you? NI number, private investigator etc

What can they do? Arrest earning, seize assets, ruin your credit rating.

How to prevent it? Move overseas and cross your fingers.

  • Well Milkshock,

If I know so little then I think that you SHOULD keep the money and find out the hard way! I think you will find that I am RIGHT and you are WRONG.

Good luck with you new career in 'DISHONESTY'

22k of tax payers money will be pursued I can tell you that much - you will not be forgotten about.

thank you - your contributions to this debate have confirmed nothing more than you have absolutely no idea about the law in this country
  • I know that sometimes the payments in the private sector CAN BE very low, but they can also be very high. By the same token, you don't know what my salary was, just like I don't know how much yours was?

    Interesting - when I was last made redundant - I got £290 x 6 - just £1800 for 6.5 years service .... slightly less than your £16k!!! I worked in the private sector ...

Only for six months. Then they'll be wanting your bank statements.

I agree with Michelle, keep the money, lie to everyone, assume none of it will ever catch up with you... best of luck with that!

companies will not hesistate to throw people on the scrap heap

we are just numbers to them - dont ask me to treat this overpayment as anything but a figure, i cant get emotional about it.

Except in the above statement, if you are not that emotional then just pay it back, it could cause you more hassle than its worth, what if they hold the referance back because you refused to pay the money back, 16 years and no referance does not look good on a CV
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
