Help with converting mpeg to DVD file for burning

Comments

  • You need an mpeg to DVD converter. Mpeg is in it's compressed form. You need to convert this mpeg to DVD VOB files. Once it is converted, a DVD folder is produced which then needs to be burned onto a DVD-R or DVD+R. Programs I have used in the past:

    DVD Santa
    TMPG Plus
    Ulead VideoStudio 9 or 10
    WinAVI
    ConvertXtoDVD

I don't think there are any free programs available.

NOTE: I have had problems with DVD Author in the past. Sometimes it works, then it doesn't. It's a bit temperamental.

Its not just a matter of converting to vob files, if you did this and burned to dvd it would not work.
I've used dvdauthor to build 100's of dvd's and the only probs I've had were when the video was wrong framerate, size etc. Its FREE to trial andf dead easy to use so try it

I agree. It's worth trying DVD Author especially if it's free. When I first started out converting compressed video to DVD's I used DVD Author. I started getting problems though, with lots of error messages and I couldn't think why. I think DVD Author is excellent for putting images to a slideshow onto a DVD. It's great for showing holiday snaps!

The best I have used is ConvertXtoDVD. It has never failed me and can convert a 300meg AVI file to 600meg VOB with excellent quality!

Ian, it does work. You create a "TS" folder with all the "BUP" and "VOB" files. I've done it hundreds of times. DVD Author allows you to put more than one video file on one DVD and it's easy to use.

Apologies! I should have phrased my original post correctly.

Sorry, forgot you needed TMPG or CCEwith dvd2svcd.

There is a free tool available with a free encoder called DIKO, I've not used it but there is a guide to it here.

It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

    Thanks for all your help!!

I have managed to do it using super dvd creator to mpeg->vob and then burn disc using power producer :j

one small problem the sound is about 3 seconds out of sync is there anything that can be done about that  I have 6 more blank DVD+R to get it right :-)
    :A
  • Finnerty, I would re-encode again. Encoding a video file is VERY memory intensive. Make sure you switch off anything that can disturb the encoding... e.g. internet, firewall, anti-virus etc. Also, leave the computer alone until it is encoded and switch off the screensaver. From my experiences, these utilities can cause synchronisation problems.

Before you burn to DVD-R, check the VOB file to make sure it's synchronised. I have InterVideo WinDVD 4 to watch DVD's on my computer. I'm assuming your computer has a program to watch DVD's??

    Hope this helps.
