The only person who comes across as rude on that thread, is you I'm afraid.

And I agree that the over use of question marks, in that particular post, comes across as extremely rude.

Sorry if you don't like this response, but you're complaining over nothing really.

I use "????" all the time, it's certainly not meant to be rude. If it were, I WOULD HAVE PUT IT LIKE THIS, maybe some underlining, italics, some angry faces......

He said none of my post made any sense, so I asked (with reasoning) do you not speak English?

And it doesn't make any difference if he's on the board of ---, I gave experience, and you know the rest.

For someone who is supposed to be there to "help", he doesn't do that much. Telling someone to "go and learn how to you it properly" is absolutely ridiculous. Especially in the terms of paypal.

I almost lost the item I sold, and if it hadn't been for me thinking about it, I would have lost it. The OP wanted advice, I gave it to them. And for that I had a backlash!!

Soolin is a she and is a board guide.

She didn't tell you to go and learn to use Paypal properly, she said you shouldn't use it until you understand how it works, which seems fair enough to me.

Your advice was poor, as Paypal doesn't work like that, that's why there are certain rules the people using it must obide.

That's all Soolin was pointing out and explained well in her post about the seller protection.

You're now coming across as someone with an attitude problem.

You DIDN'T ask him "with reasoning".
It was a hypothetical question and it was sarcastic and rude.
It was all those 3 things because it was obvious that Soolin spoke English because his/her reply to you was in perfect English.

    !

I (and many other posters) think that, regardless of the intention, many question marks make something seem rude in the same way as CAPS or underlining. I'd say eye rolly smiley rather than  but meh...

People sometimes post in capitals and it's taken as shouting/anger/impatience even though they could have just intended to make it 'stand out'.
Maybe your ???? are there to emphasise your confusion but it's definitely easy (easier?) to read it as sarcastic/rude instead. Maybe it's something to consider in future if you want people to be kinder & stay in a good mood with you on here.

Hmm, really? I think most people would interpret 'Do you not speak English????' as 'You're really quite stupid aren't you? Evidenced by your inability to understand me. Instead of looking at my own post to see whether it makes sense, I'll just abuse you by suggesting you're too thick to speak the language that is, let's face it, extremely likely to be your first language'.

It's a rhetorical question that merely means 'You're stupid', not a reasonable request for information.

  • Jaibaby I just noticed you apologised on the ebay board.

I do struggle to understand why you only think your replies were 'supposedly' rude rather than actually rude (because thinking someone was rude first doesn't make your reply not rude) but I think it was nice of you to post an apology anyway. Not many people would bother to do that.

I sometimes use capitals (but only the odd word or two) in a sentence as emphasis.

Basically, I write as I would speak so if I'd put an emphasis on a certain spoken word, I do the same on an internet forum.

    Like THIS for example. ;)

I agree with Fluffnutter's post below, regardless of what the OP says, I'm convinced that the ???? were meant as an insult.

OP may think s/he isn't rude, but s/he's definitely very defensive.

I think whe you are new to the internet forum business it is easy to take things out of context. it;s not like speaking to people face to face and people type things in a way they see OK but to others comes across as rude.

When I first started on here I used to get into loads of pointless arguments now, now when I have had enough I unsubscribe to the thread so i can;t be tempted to get back into the arguments. I leaves you wound up and p**sed off for the rest of the day too.

I think we have all been there on here at one time or another, but I come on here when I am bored (OK, should be doing housework, LOL) and read the forum instead of a book or a newspaper like I'd have done before t'internet.

It is, however, very easy to take things out of context and offend anyone with just a silly off hand comment and then it escalates. When it does, it is time to walk away from the thread.
