Some will be stored for next Spring, some will be eaten (by us), some will be given to the wildlife and some will be packaged up in homemade seed packets to gift to friends in their Christmas cards. Any left over, I may go the guerilla gardening route, but I'll do that at my Uni as a final year leaving gift0 -

Firstly, I've never had a garden before!
Secondly - I have a bunch of 7 foot high sunflowers (so much for Russian Giant), all turning to black seeds. I've left them on the plant so far. Partly because I am expecting/hoping that there will be some birds grateful for the seeds.
Question - how exactly would I get some of these seeds ready for human consumption?
(Most will be guerillaed at some point)
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Jojo - just curious, did you get your Russian Giants from GW mag back in April?
For human consumption, we roast/toast ours first and then de-hull them as we eat them (like monkey nuts).0 -

I did, indeed. Very large heads on them, but they only grew about 7ft - although that could have something to do with being planted at the base of a wall in a garden that was a building site this time last year, and then being left to get on with it all summer. I was quite impressed, though, as I've never grown anything more sophisticated than runner beans beforeI could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
The wind didn't blow it over, and I am now up to 11 heads, all of which I've managed to get in picture this time:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

I'm going to measure my biggest sunflower tomorrow afternoon and the smallest but I think you win on both accounts. I do have some multi head ones too but think you win there also!0
