The car in question was available from about 2001 and it's still a very similar shape to this day.

So I'm still unsure how they've got this number lol

I agree, you cannot get H010, BUT you can get H10, is this what your friend has?

Also, if she has actually bought a personalised H010 plate, the DVLA would not transfer the plate to a car older than 2010.

Nope, its H010 or HO1O - but both the 0 and O are the same font. Lol...

It'll be something like H810 ABC with a yellow plate screw through the middle of the 8

Have you actually seen it on the car, or this just what they told you when you were chatting?

The only way she could have a HO10 plate on a 2004 car must be illegally, the DVLA simply do not transfer plates to cars to make them look newer.

Check out the site, you cannot buy prefix plates that have a zero as the first number.

If they do actually buy a current style plate, this can only be issued to a vehicle that is the same age or newer than the plate. Ie. you can make a car look it's age or older, but not newer.

Yes I've seen the car and the plates and there are no screws or screw caps anywhere to be seen.

Next time I see it I'll get a pic and post on here.

Is the car an import? The DVLA occasionally screw up with those and go with the registration date rather than the manufacture date. I know of one guy with an R32 Skyline (last made in 1994) on a non-personalised 09 plate.

Are there any restrictions to the year of registration number I can choose?

If you are buying a registration mark from one of DVLA's auctions then the full Terms and Conditions of Sale will be contained within the auction catalogue. When buying a registration direct from our online business the full terms and conditions can be viewed during the purchase process View the terms and conditions of sale
Just remember you can make your vehicle look as old as you wish but you can not make it look newer than it actually is. For example you cannot put a Y registration number on a T registered vehicle but you could choose any prefix range from an A to a T. For more information, please see the following question What are the original issue dates of registration numbers? to see the dates of issue.

well harvey, as you didnt give the real ABC part, only you know what that is. So put the plate into the mid database and see if H zero one zero, or HO one zero comes up as an insured car.

Well whatever it is, I can't be legal..... Numberplate's should not confuse or mislead.

You should try checking the type/vehicle reg on here:

    http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/

If it doesn't show up when typed as it appears, then it's illegal.
