10 plate but not a 10 plate...?

Ok, so how does this work then...

Was chatting to a girl the other day who had a 2004 car... She'd put a private number on it which made it look like a 10 plate.

It was H010 ABC (the ABC bit is made up by me to protect her identity but that was the layout)

Is H010 ABC not actually an H-reg plate?
  • If it's as you typed it it's just an 'H' reg.

Yep, but you can see the possibility for confusion between H010 ABC (H plate) and HO 10 ABC (10 plate).

Suppose that’s why we don’t have O as one of the letter on number plates

anyone can buy a 10 reg and put it on a car.

But not on an older car?

So you're saying the plate is H, zero, one, zero. ABC?

I didn't think you could have a zero as the first number?

no its not, a proper H reg would not have a zero in that position, H010
  • I didn't think so either but that's how the question's typed.

On the old style plates you can't zero-pad the number like that. It should be H10 ABC

Probably just went to one of the online "show plates" suppliers that will put any old crap onto a numberplate for you.

Also, I'm 99% sure that the official numberplate font actually uses the same glyph for both 0 and O, so she basically has a false plate.

H reg is ~1990, so it's going to be bloody obvious to even the most stupid copper too!

I agree, you cannot get H010, BUT you can get H10, is this what your friend has?

Also, if she has actually bought a personalised HO10 plate, the DVLA would not transfer the plate to a car older than 2010.

Is H010 ABC not actually an H-reg plate? In any event what is the question here, anyone can buy a 10 reg and put it on a car.

If the car was first registered before March 2010 then that would be illegal.
