New speed cameras?

TELREA Posts: 26 Forumite
anyone noticed the new cameras suddenly starting to spring up alot on the A class roads lately, seem to be on a very tall pole and the camera is a smallish rectangular shape with a black front, normally there will be 2 together, with i assume a green box at the bottom(supplying the juice i guess)Anyway i was informed(hopefully wrongly)that its possible these are a new speed cam being trialled, using GPS...the only camera that uses this technology i think is the speed spike camera, and these look nothin like the ones i described. And there's me thinking they were simply monitoring the traffic:eek:

They are ANPR cameras http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/08/12/northern_ireland_anpr/ and track all vehicle movements.

Does anyone know anything about the cameras at PSNI HQ today, they looked like TV cameras but appeared to be pointing out to the road?

It is probably worth pointing out that these cameras are there to help track people who are involved with illegal activities and who we would really like to catch... all this talk is just advertising the system to the criminals and making it easier for them to avoid them. So maybe we should drop the ANPR discussions and let the cameras do their job!?

This site would be the least of your worries, here might be more revealing in due course http://bigbrotheriswatching.co.uk/Anpr_Camera_Locations.html

Thats all very well and good but very unfortunately these cameras are harvesting the data of innocent motorists. That information is then kept in a database for anything between 2 and 5 years. A simply unacceptable approach to policing as there is absolutely no need for innocents data to be stored.

As an innocent, it doesn't bother me.

Well as an innocent i strongly object. And there lies the problem.

These cameras are being deployed in their thousands yet the public was not consulted at any stage. There was no parliamentary debate (even though it had been promised by David Blunkett) and no legislation introduced.

Many people object to the traffic mapping of their movements that these cameras do yet their opinions are being disregarded and tramped upon in a very undemocratic fashion.

Oh come on. Why don't you move to an island and apply your own system? Then you innocent (but objecting) individuals can be free from big brother and enjoy the attentions of the criminals who you have made it damned near impossible to stop.

And I strongly suspect you WERE consulted. Just because the public representative you helped elect did not do what YOU wanted, does not mean that you were not consulted!
