Just to join in about the animals, a little while ago (about 4 months) we adopted an older collie dog to be a companion to our current collie b!tch, as she had always had company but our older dog died 2 years ago.

Turns out that rather than the 10 years old we though he was, Toby is about 7. The previous owners had booted him into the garden on his own for days on end when their other dog died, and when he ran away told the pound that they couldn't afford the £60 to collect him and didn't want to travel to fetch him. Had the kennel not picked him up, he would have been put to sleep.

He's such a lovely dog, but it's obvious that he's been hit before and not been properly fed as he wolfs down anything we give him.

My question when we got him (we took him home the same day we saw him as we fell in love!) was how someone could have a dog for so many years but not train him well, then not feel any sense of responsibility to a member of the family. He was a lost soul for the first 2 months and you could see he was wondering when he'd go home.

Like r.a.i.n.b.o.w I hate thinking of animals in distress, and cannot fathom how people can be so cold.

Turkey is a harsh place where the reality of life is up and front of you! the uk has progressed into a caring developed country where animals have value. i do wonder as the economy crumples and people have to eject all luxuries that pets will be the first to suffer--i know its cruel to cosset a pets from birth and then 'put' them out but i wonder how many of these people are facing the situation of 'its either the pet goes or we will go under'-there are some frightening figures on how much pets cost to keep--i dont have any pets now but i love animals

Must be something about Collies - ours is fed exactly as he should be but he will still steal anything that is left unattended. I was quite cross about the entire apple braid he had last week less than five minutes after he had eaten his tea! He will also pinch the hens pellets if he gets a chance and rather enjoys rooting in the compost pile. Mind you our lurcher was worse, she once had an entire roast rib of beef off the worktop. She was a rescue dog though and had regularly been not fed, and he isn't.

Sammy - that is wonderful news for you. A garden makes such a difference with the children.

i had a border collie as a teenager --she was fiercely defensive of her owner! lovely intelligent dog and i loved walking her despite her attacking 'offensive dogs'--her name was tina and i inherited her from my grandfather after his death--i believe in the afterlife and really believe my grandfather is my 'guardian' spirit and i often 'think' of him despite him dying in 1977--my dad didnt sound good on the phone tonight and my mum has taken to her bed---i will come home in june and i think it will be the last time i ever see them because i think they are not long for this earth--i am crying now!

A bit late, but only just got here: Congratulations Sammy-Kaye! :j

Great news. You should be able to make the savings you need to pay the extra rent by using your garden well.

As for us with the house, we decided against it. We're only about 3 years from paying off the mortgage here, and house prices are still in decline in the area too. Flat prices seem to be holding their own or going up, since people are downsizing. So after going through some very long term calculations regarding mortgage interest, we're better off where we are for now. I think long term we'll build something, but not until we can do it entirely mortgage free (i.e sell this unit, buy a plot, live in a caravan and build as we go along). That way we don't end up with something too big, since I can't seem to reconcile having that in my head.

    Late post

Chantelles owner has turned up:( so we took her to the vets to return her..WW3 started...

Owner: Oh sweety there you are

Chantelle: Hairs on end grrrrrrrrrrrr wooof grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr yowp...

Owner: Oh silly doggie come to mummy

Chantelle: RUFF WOOF WOOF then proceeds to hide behind vets counter refusing to come out, at which point Montys
alarm system is alerted and starts questioning said owner, who confesses the the "bl***y* dog was a gift from her ex partner and that she wanted rid of her and had every intention of selling her especially after fiasco of her running off, well Monty man of few words said "How much???" owner replied "XXX £s" so after telling her to bring her KC papers and bits and peices in the morning said amount would be available and the dog would be purchased by him then then, me I didnt say a word, vet said he had paid through the nose for her, he said well its my nose and Im happy and off they go into the car park man and hound tail wagging, no Grrs woofs or ruffs just a tong :Due lolling pooch who has claimed the back of the car :rotfl:.

Back home Chantelle has been renamed Shanni as Lucy kept calling her that so Shanni it is....so man and pooch are sitting by the woodburner with her having her tummy rubbed with his big toe and Lucy is playing at vets:D:D....

So the new greenhouse is forgotten :p and Chantelle/Shanni goes to vets Monday for microchipping/injections etc once her history comes from her previous owner and my old battered couch in the kitchen is where she lolls, paws casually crossed watching me, she wanders from one to the other and is lovley, footprints on the clean floor :D:D:Dtook her for a walk on the lead, Montys had her off the lead and she comes back when called to heel, this doggie knew she was not wanted at her previous home but is very much wanted here.

So it is with much pleasure I announce the safe arrival of Shanni aka Chantelle into our family, a much welcomed addition who has a penchant for chicken :D:D:D and I suspect a high hairdressing bill..well we shall see....

Annie56, Lucy, Shanni, Monty xxxx 10 chooks, a spider up in the corner, and doggy footprints on the kitchen floor:rotfl::rotfl:
