My DD works in a dog rescue centre and they are at saturation level with dogs that have been given up, abandoned and/or rescued - they get a fair amount of KC registered pedigrees especially the big breeds like Great Danes, Labradors, Mastiffs, Dobermans, Rottweilers as well chihuahuas, cairn terriers, shituzu's etc - seems mad that these dogs are bought for huge sums but then become too expensive to keep so are just let go, especialy as many are still puppies when they go into the centre.
We live out in the sticks and have caught a fair few dogs and cats that have turned up out of the blue looking frightened and bewildered . . . too clean and sweet smelling for country animals or to have legged here it across fields. None of them had proper ID discs and once on a walk miles off the beaten track, we came across a cat, mooching sadly round an empty food bowl - guess some ratbag of an owner had taken it there, given him a dishful of food and then bogged off while it was distracted by the food (said cat came home with us and has had a long and happy life). In a little copse nearby, we spent many frustrating hours trying to round up a posse of of white lop earred rabbits and a family of guinea pigs that had been dumped there - sadly they were too frightened and skitty to catch and over the weeks disappeared - fell prey to the foxes and stoats I suppose
God bless your Monty for taking care of the poodle - you've got a good bloke theredefinately made of the right sort of stuff IMO
You may not be financially well off but you are rich in what money can't buy - love, compassion, kindness and caring.
Hi all, lurker and reader here
I HATE the thought of frightened/unhappy animals. How ANY owner can dump their pet I don't know! I look at my 2 mad moggies and would never ever consider even GIVING them away to a good home, let alone dump them!! Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it (and I'm not a sentimental/over-emotional person). I know just how much my female cat misses my husband when he's out (she mooches about, sleeps, doesn't eat, and waits by the front door) and how my male cat misses ME in the same way when I'm away. Some people don't deserve to be pet owners, thank gawd for us animal lovers, and I take my hat off to the people who run shelters and charities for lost and abandoned animals.
As to having to give up "much-loved" pets in today's economic climate, I say "PANTS". I'd rather miss dinner or go without a bottle of plonk or a pair of new undies or walk rather than take the bus if it meant the difference between my fluffy friends eating or having to ultimately be rehomed. (and yes, I understand there MAY be times where a rehome is unavoidable, such as having to move into accomodation that doesn't allow pets, etc, but my point is that pets aren't - and shouldn't be seen as - disposable luxuries.)

I love that advert. SOO true. The past few days, when I was panicking about having lost my engagement ring, Ozzie wouldn't leave my side. He kept offering love. He's worked out the stress has gone now, and is happily sitting in the back garden eating carrot.:TGC Mar 13 £47.36/£1500 -
my mum comes out to turkey and falls in love with all the street animals--the british are in love with animals like no other nationality--my wife rolls her eyes because my mum shows more love to the street cats than me!--i do like animals but i prioritise my family first----come on rip me apart!!
If that's what the animals in Turkey are used to, then fine, they don't know any different, no harm done. Take them out of Turkey and put them in *insert country currently at war/brink of starvation here* and they will be unhappy.
Likewise, you shouldn't domesticate an animal (and give it love, warm home, nice food etc) for 6 months then chuck it back on the streets when you've had enough, that's just cruel and unneccessary.0 -
De lurking again briefly, to say how you lovely people have inspired me this afternoon!
Put 'puter on as I took some stuff upstairs to put away, and have been playing catch-up on this thread (since last weekend's posts) all afternoon!
In between OH has come back from lottie with tales of everything planted out, but the best bit is he had 10 strawberries & 5 little broad beans! WHAT a treat this early! Strawberries will go with yoghurt tonight, broad beans in the stir fry tomorrow.
For lunch I used up all the ratty ends of salad with some cold chicken - I had 2 ''got to to be used soon' wraps & Hubbie had a couple of slices off the 'still warm it's just come out the breadmaker' loaf!
Tea tonight is Jacket spuds with chicken legs & salad, so being very good & cooking off 2 rhubarb (just picked from the garden) and goosegog (last years from freezer) crumbles, one for tomorrow, one for freezer.
Until last year I'd've cooked it all as needed, but I won't be needing oven on tomorrow now. DH had hip replacement before Xmas (having been made redundant in October), so am used to coping with just the ESA and my salary now but am already horrified at thought of fuel increasing even more - better get on with the preparing for winter now!
DS has been home for 8 weeks (he works at sea), and now he's gone back I can have a good de-clutter & preparation.
So glad about the house Sammy - sounds lovely. Would the zoo you were talking about be near me? If so, I'd go for the giraffes - they had a baby this year! :j:D:beer::eek::A:p:rotfl::cool::):(:T0 -

Ours is selling boxes of 12 stripey Christmas Canes (dated until 05/05/2012) for 10p a box.
I love using these to with I put the ribbons on Christmas presents so I bought 5 boxes :xmassmile Lots of other Christmas themed boxed goodies in the 10p basket - 6 edible candy shot glasses & mini candy Christmas trees on long dates - Malteaser crackers & choc novelties were 30p but short dated :santa2:
..it'll soon be here! So shop early :rotfl:
Thats another shop to add to my list of "must go and investigate while DD is away or at school" now! I thought this was supposed to be a money saving site?:rotfl::rotfl:Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
Congratulations Sammy! From what I have read you deserve to get a house for your family. The location sounds ideal especially as Ben will be able to see his school friends & Grandma easily.
Cleaned the kitchen cupboards this morning as had decorators & other workmen in last week repairing ceiling & cornice on the kitchen cabinets following a leak in a central heating pipe a few weeks ago. Luckily I was able to claim on my insurance for the damage. Unfortunately my left wrist now aches & my right thumb has jabbing pains (think I am getting arthritis in my right hand now) so am resting my hands now as have other jobs that need doing tomorrow.
Haven't used my breadmaker for a few months but think I will give it a go tomorrow. I love my breadmaker but just haven't had the time or inclination to use it recently. It will be a 'free' love though as have plenty of flour & yeast in the cupboards.
Have a good weekend everybody.0 -

So glad about the house Sammy - sounds lovely. Would the zoo you were talking about be near me? If so, I'd go for the giraffes - they had a baby this year!
Possibly - It starts with an M and ends in Well.:D We use to know the keepers there and I have fed two of the giraffes before as we were friends for years.
Have to admit it became a realization that I will have to be very money savy from now on as our outgoings are set to increase now obviously with extra rent. We were paying £61 a week and will now instead be paying £79 a week.
So looks like I will have to re-stratergise my spending and budget from now on. Think a vegetable plot is a definite for us and plenty of home baking but at least in the house I will have the space to do it - like a bread maker for example!and witha kitchen diner that is much more space - plus my mother rang me earlier and said she has a table and chairs for me too so we can start having family meals now. Plus hopefully it will save my electric too because Ben has a garden to amuse himself.
Time to find me again0
