Hi Scottishminnie, having done consumer market research for a company who make a lot of those products, the cleaning power of them is minimal and the reason most people use them is to have the colour and smell added to ahve the 'sense' that cleaning is happening. in reality, they really dont do much.

not sure therefore what the answer is, but perhaps try with nothing and see whether you think the toilet seems less fresh? HTH

I find those blue thingies stain the loo by clinging to the limescale so it makes the loo look grubby! I haven't used one in years. I try to swish and swipe the loos most days (usually manage every other day at best!) I just use a little squirt of ecover surface cleaner quite diluted in a spray bottle and some tissue to wipe the seats, outer areas etc (a microfibre cloth would be more economical but is too icky for me) then once flushed I bog brush round a squirt of ecover loo cleaner. I bought it in a 5L container when it was 1/3 off on Natural Collection website - I think it will last me about 2 years....... My loo seems quite clean I think

I'm sure I read on the US flylady emails that she just uses leftover bits of soap in the bog brush holder so that she just swishes and swipes with a soapy brush. That seems quite old style to me :D Soap is soap I suppose!

thanks guys. I asked around in the office today for views and the opinion was that most people had ditched the bloo type things long ago although one person confessed to having put small amounts of blue food dye in her cistern to begin with as her husband was convinced it wasn't clean without a cistern block:) I think I'll go without for a while. We don't live in a hard water area and I clean the loo daily so it should be good enough.

FTM - congratulations on hubby's job

Hester - congratulations on the wedding

it's nice to have some celebrations amidst all our money saving.

I was momentarily distracted there - I'm looking out to the most beautiful red sky to the back of the house and the wind turbines are silhouetted against it - it's really quite breathtaking.
I always think red sky at night, shepherds delight etc however the forecast for tomorrow is heavy rain. Maybe the weather people got it wrong - fingers crossed.

I'm definitely going to make butter at the end of the week with the double cream from the freezer. I have a kitchenaid - do I just use the metal paddle? I'm thinking the whisk is no use as the butter gets more solid?

You can use the whisk (I do on the Kenwood) because the butter doesn't get very solid - you have little lumps in a sea of whey. You stop whisking when it gets to that point. Sure, some sticks to the whisk, but it's not like you're trying to MIX the butter. Then you strain it through a sieve to save the whey and start the whole squeeze and rinse routine... I posted a step by step with pictures a couple of pages back* which shows you the various steps and what it should look like, if you're not sure :)

    *ETA: post #3903. I've just checked :D

    Morning All :D

FTM - Happy anniversary :T:T 25 years is a real milestone x Congrats on the new job for hubby too, really nice to see that everything is on the up for you.

CC - you cant kill him now! You only get 10 years max for justifiable homicide :rotfl: and you have done more than twice that amount so far!!

Hester - Bright Blessings, am pleased you had a fab day :D but pictures are required you know!

Redlady - just because he has offered the full asking price doesnt mean that he can afford to pay it OR that it will go through at that point. Trust that the universe will provide what you need, if not neccessarily what you want ;)

Madartha - can you give me a link to the pan I need please for the recipe of children in butter? I have tried but as the biggest one is nigh on 6ft then I couldnt fit him in the oven..........

mamaminie - nope dont do anything. Its a good year for apples due to the cold winter but they will naturally drop the tiny ones and then you will see the bigger ones start to come through. The rain that we are getting now should be doing the apples no end of good, even if the rest of us arent so keen!!

Charlies aunt - I know this was posted a couple of days ago, but have a fab time at the Lincs Show. Have told the boys to take all of their friends over to see you tomorrow (so apologies as the whole school teachers included goes to the show!) the weather forecast is for scattered showers I think, so wellies and suncream at the ready.

Gosh think I have caught up but apologies to anyone I have missed!

Weather is a bit dismal here again today, although we are having bright spells between the showers so its not all bad. It just makes getting out into the garden for any real length of time a bit of a problem. However on the positive side, not so long ago we were officially in drought and now that seems to have died a death :T

Has anyone used Sainsburys home delivery service? In my area it seems a bit more expensive than the others but unfortunately is the only place now that does the full range of lactofree products.

Taurusgb sorry to hear of your diagnosis but following a gluten free diet will probably make you feel a whole heap better! If you are intolerant then its not just the stomach pains but your whole body heads off into an immune response which is why you feel so rubbish. However all is not lost! There are some good books out there this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Wheat-Gluten-Free-Cookbook/dp/1904943675/ref=pd_sim_b_4 and the Phil Vickery one are excellent. Replacing flour with just gf flour is not the best way to cook, I use chickpea, rice and potato flour combined together and that works really well. Cooking OS anyway, we incorporated gf cooking relatively easily, and you can pick up chick pea flour from most indian food suppliers or approved foods often have it in.

Hope everyone has a good day hugs to all who need them xx

Thanks for info - haven't been diagnosed as coeliac yet but doc said that was what she wanted to test for as recent blood tests show I have low Vit D, anaemia and inflammation markers in my blood.....have been really touched by all the pm's I've received - they really cheered me up as well as offerring support. There are some horrid aspects to the internet but there are also overwhelmingly marvellous ones too and the people on this thread are one of them. Thank you.

Started the day by collecting a 10p fine from 20 year old DD who had left lamp on all night (I've just started taxing everyone 10p who leaves a light on and have collected £1.20 in 3 days ) and have a difficult morning at work to look forward to, so am off now for a walk in the garden to gather my thoughts and calm myself.

    Have a good day everyone.

Westlothianlass yes its heavy rain here. Again!! :(
I got married (eloped at 16) in Jan 1966, and my FIL told us he'd give it 6 months. So nananana to him, wherever he is :D
Still re-reading Nella Last - she could make meals out of some odd stuff eh? using half a rabbit leg to feed two people is awesome. We seem to eat half a chicken between us easily.
Think we should all boycott expensive loo cleaners and surface cleaners because all you're paying for really is the smell.
I spent ages in Costco last night looking for dried blueberries, Kittie, and cant find them anywhere. I lost the will to live and came out after I'd found the prunes for the 17th time.

    .

oooh I love Nella Last's books....so much so that I have them in paperback and as audio books so that I can listen to her whilst I'm cooking - soooooo cozy. :) One of our favourite puddings is from one of her books - whatever fruit I have, topped by stale sponge cake with left over custard poured on and baked (I also sprinkle coconut on top if I have any but can't remember if that refinement is mine or Nellas')

Have had my walk in the (rainy) garden and am now off to brave the office :( would much rather be getting on with the garden, sewing, crochet, knitting, baking, watching paint dry .........

Congratulations, Hester - I saw some ppics on your blog. What a fantastic and very personal day :D x

FTM - congrats on 25 years today! We've been together since July 1986, but didn't get married until 1995 (mind you, we were still at school when we got together!) And congrats re hubby's job, too - fab news :D

Went to local NCT nearly new sale on Saturday - sold £115 of stuff. Doubly good - money in and unwanted stuff out. Will be going on the mtge as an overpayment - every little helps!! ;) Have put some stuff on ebay on Sunday (free listing weekend) and donated a high chair to a local charity and a bag of clothes to charity too. Kept some bits to try and sell next time (mainly toys)

Need to hang washing out today - trying to guess the weather. Got 3 loads dried yesterday, but there's one wet one in the machine and another to go out. I also need to change the sofa covers (chocolate and yogurt on them) - so will need a properly sunny day to get those dry - hopefully next week...

Am awaiting a courier to collect a parcel - they were supposed to turn up yesterday, but didn't... grrrrrr!!
I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul
