Wow you lot cant half talk - so much to catch up on.:)
Congrats to HH and FTM
We have been married ten years next year but together almost 18:eek::eek:
Well still no washing line - who knew it was so difficult to buy a line post anywhere?? I suggested buying a piece of scaffolding and adapting it but dad is in full must be the proper thing mode - attempting to preserve value of house - I cant really see a washing line adding value myself buy hey ho.
More stuff gone on ebay but bizarrely none of the baby stuff is selling at all. Kitchen appliances are going for crazy money - most times I am getting way more than I paid for stuff.
It was glorious sunshine here yesterday but no washing done as dad was here doing the big jobs - today when I have the time the weather is awful!!!
And once again I need advice - our golden lab is shedding hair like there is no tomorrow - and the bottom floor of the house is laminate hall and slate tiled kitchen, dining room. the problem is that even hoovering or brushing twice a day it still is awful and full of hair - which looks terrible when anyones comes to the door but worse its driving OH insane - he is very OCD about animal fur - and getting worse. Have tried hoovering the dog - he loved it but it didnt really help - so am looking for suggestions on ways to either reduce his hair loss or clean it up quicker/easier, please.0 -
I am curently reading Nella Last in the 50s and as there are more than a few Nella readers on MSE I'd just like to ask - what does everyone make of her husband? He seems like a total oddball to me, having funny turns and feeling sick when she reads the wrong thing out of the paper. I have tried to apply todays knowledge to the characters in her book and obviously there is a lady who had Altzheimers and the signs of her son Cliff and his friends (obviously the gay he turned out to be) but can come to no explanatory conclusions about her husband. I always thought people were hardier in days gone by and not so much of the weary willies we get these days where every minor ailment is a syndrome etc. I'd love to go back in time and hear what he was like before they got married and were dating and what attracted her to him. I know Barrow was probably more of a small village then than it is now but if he was that miserable and antisocial I'm surprised she married him at all.
I'm also constantly saddened by how B*i*t*c!hy and judgemental she seems to be of other people for the slightest thing. I always imagined most ppl to be kinder and friendlier on the whole - well a lot more than today.
I love reading her books as they always raise so many questions.. I never understand the meals they seem to have. They just eat bread and butter and cake for dinner etc and meals seem to consist of cake etc.. I know they didnt have mod cons etc but if I ate a meal consisting of jam and cake every night I'd get very fat very fast??What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Reverbe -I havent read the Nella books so cant comment directly upon them, however the idea that people were kinder and friendlier is probably on the whole true - but they will have been more judgemental and afraid on the unusual. People were very intolerant of anyone that was gay or who stood out, that was just the times they lived in. I remember hearing my great grandmother - who was the kindest person, - being shocked that "whatshername down the road- her daughter is " and then mouthing so I couldnt hear -living in sin!!!! she was absolutely beside herself that someone in her road had a realtive that wasnt married yet living with someone - and she found it very difficult to speak to the woman whose daughter it was afterwards.
attitudes now are much more liberal over many things - but the sense of community, welcome and friendliness to some extent have also been lost.0 -
Jacksons in Holbeach for the meat and also trusty Tommy Laws for the sausages.
Can't beat those sausages anywhere!
Know both well, I used to sort of knock around with Simon Law amongst others in the Punchbowl or Bass House.
Actually we have a butchers here in Grimsby that is equal to those sausages. PettitsMy self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).

Thats nothing that money can buy, peace of mind, priceless.

I agree, Reverbe - he does sound a very odd man! It seems as though he suffered from depression which got worse and worse as he got older (of course they didn't have the antidepressant drugs which help so many people today), and i can only think he must have been a lot nicer and cheerier when they first knew each other! i have enjoyed her books on the whole but i think the 1950s one is quite depressing in itself.
I think they tended to have a "proper meal" at lunchtime rather than in the evening. And of course people had "afternoon tea" in those days too.0 -

Erm, is that the dog or the OH?:p (Sorry, couldn't resist!)0 -
I dont want to read Nella in the 50s, was just interested in the wartime one. I think she should've given her moaning old sod of a husband a good telling to. He annoys me to hell in the wartime book.
Re meals, people were not as well off then. Meat was a lot dearer. The old ways of filling up hungry people cheaply were by having only one meaty proper meal, plus a breakfast, "tea" with bread & butter, cakes & scones, then a supper which might be savoury with toast. We think we're hard up now but they would think we were really rich and posh going by what we eat0
