And once again I need advice - our golden lab is shedding hair like there is no tomorrow - and the bottom floor of the house is laminate hall and slate tiled kitchen, dining room. the problem is that even hoovering or brushing twice a day it still is awful and full of hair - which looks terrible when anyones comes to the door but worse its driving OH insane - he is very OCD about animal fur - and getting worse. Have tried hoovering the dog - he loved it but it didnt really help - so am looking for suggestions on ways to either reduce his hair loss or clean it up quicker/easier, please.
1. It is perfectly reasonable and normal to vacuum a yellow dog. I used to do it to my lemon Beagle in the 1980s when I was cleaning my room. He loved it and it meant my room was less furry than the other bedrooms.
2. I have a cat that is very similar, creating tumbleweeds of fluff everywhere. I also agree that taking the offending pest into the garden and furminating them definitely helps.
3. I have threatened to arrange for this to happen to her...
..but then I would suffer from cold feet at night.
Perhaps your ever-so-slightly-OCD husband would find this a less appealing prospect than putting up with the moult?I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I am curently reading Nella Last in the 50s and as there are more than a few Nella readers on MSE I'd just like to ask - what does everyone make of her husband? He seems like a total oddball to me, having funny turns and feeling sick when she reads the wrong thing out of the paper. I have tried to apply todays knowledge to the characters in her book and obviously there is a lady who had Altzheimers and the signs of her son Cliff and his friends (obviously the gay he turned out to be) but can come to no explanatory conclusions about her husband. I always thought people were hardier in days gone by and not so much of the weary willies we get these days where every minor ailment is a syndrome etc. I'd love to go back in time and hear what he was like before they got married and were dating and what attracted her to him. I know Barrow was probably more of a small village then than it is now but if he was that miserable and antisocial I'm surprised she married him at all.
I'm also constantly saddened by how B*i*t*c!hy and judgemental she seems to be of other people for the slightest thing. I always imagined most ppl to be kinder and friendlier on the whole - well a lot more than today.
I love reading her books as they always raise so many questions.. I never understand the meals they seem to have. They just eat bread and butter and cake for dinner etc and meals seem to consist of cake etc.. I know they didnt have mod cons etc but if I ate a meal consisting of jam and cake every night I'd get very fat very fast??
My grandparents always had their main meal at lunchtime. In the early evening they'd have something on toast or a boiled egg or salad in the summer followed by cake-pretty similar to Nella Last's tea.
They weren't overweight-portions were smaller and they used a lot more calories as they tended to walk everywhere, gardened and their house was pretty cold. My grandma did her washing in a copper and used a mangle but Nella did send hers to the laundry.0 -
I dont want to read Nella in the 50s, was just interested in the wartime one. I think she should've given her moaning old sod of a husband a good telling to. He annoys me to hell in the wartime book.
LMAOOOO me too. I have thought about it being depression but am not convinced. After reading the Moonstone where someone suffered with nerves which just seemed to be an account of hypochondria then seeing Nellas hubby go on about his nerves. It all seems odd. I am well aware about what depression really is and also the differences in personality which makes some people more dour than others. With Mr Last he doesnt just seem down or dour , he is not just shy but positively antisocial. I am probably a little depressed at the moment myself with my life situation and a coulpe of bereavements knocking me for six meaning I am feeling a little numb emotionally - however i dont go saying i'm feeling sick or having a funny turn and taking to my bed every time I hear something on the news or in the papers that isnt all light and cheerful. I think he has some kind of mental illness tbh. It also shocked me the amount of ppl in the book mentioned going to convalescent or rest homes left right and centre. Is this weary willieness again or is it a way of dealing with a lot of untalked about mental issues? What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
I haven't read Nella Last but see that she lived in Barrow. The FIL came from Barrow and when MIL (who didn't) first visited was astounded that the first "course" of sunday lunch was Yorkshire pudding (in then Lancashire
) and gravy and the roast followed. This was to fill people up so they needed less of the main course!

I think I have finally caught up on the thread. So much going on.
My store cupoboard supplies arrived today. I am now waiting on my storage jars to arrive today. I have arranged one cupboard and will finish the others this evening when I get back from yoga. I read in the paper this morning that tomato paste is set to rise so baked beans etc will rise.
I really need to sort my garden out. All I have been doing is removing snails from my plants. I need to sow more lettuce and radishes tomorrow.GC 2011 Feb £626.89/£450 NSD3/7 March £531.26/£450 April £495.99/£500 NSD 0/7 May £502.79/£500

hi all
sorry for not popping back in sooner but I have been looking round the house and attempting to get my house together.
Glad to say me and Holly are finally over our flu bug thing - either way feeling much better.
I have secondly reclaimed my kitchen so will be getting hold of my mother - who has now been banned from my house - long story - who has my dining table so hoping she'll drop it into work and Owen can pick it up there. Then finally my kitchen will almost be complete other than owens shed items which will go hopefully.
Speaking of Owen he is keeping going with his shed project - its his birthday today too so ill forgive him the day off but he is making progress with the foundations - I'm just hoping he will keep going with it so his birthday present was 50 breeze blocks and a jumbo bag of sand which cost me £60 in total but it will save a lot of stress and arguments in the long run.
I have decided too that an upright freezer is going to be the best option for me in this house - a chest freezer will take up too much room I think whereas I have a nice alcove that I can stand a big upright freezer in. Have investigated and there is a nice one on tesco for just short of £200 which has 6 draws in it.
Anyway just a quick pop in to let you know Im ok - am off to celebrate the rest of Owens birthday and catch up on the preparing for winter thread.Time to find me again0 -
You'll probably have moved on by the time you read this post, but I just wanted to say that I don't think there is anything odd about the posters who are sensative to places and things. I am not in the least sensative but when we were house hunting, there were some houses that just felt wrong/bad/unpleasant as soon as we stepped through the door. The one we ended up with belonged to a divorcing couple and the condition and decor was awful but it had a lovely atmosphere and we've been very happy here for 20+ years.:)0

Been an interesting day so far.
Whilst up at 5:30am this morning with my little baby boy there was a raid on the neighbours from hell. I had been warned by the council that this was happening but not when. Glad I was awake as I would not have been happy to have been woken up by all the noise (I'm woken up enough by my own children!). We had 6 police cars and 2 police vans. There were about 20 police officers and they closed the street. Hopefully something will be done about them soon.
My baby boy then decided he was not going to go back to sleep so that was that. Got my little girl up to get ready for nursery and as we were about to leave the baby boy got sick everywhere. Talk about timing. We were later than usual for nursery but the staff understand there that things are a little hectic at the moment.
My computer was caught by a virus and I cannot use it now as it's one of those viruses that tracks what you type and would therefore pick up any passwords, sites, banking details that I have. Hubby has taken it to work to fix but that will take time and he reckons as it is very old and barely functioning anyway he may dispose of it. I'm lucky that I have a laptop from work (that I have never used) that I am now using.
Trying to be very OS and empty my freezer but I keep forgetting to get the meat out to defrost!I must try and remember to get it out the night before.
I've acquired quite a few coupons for money off nappies so am trying to get the best deals I can from the supermarkets and combine offers.
Once we are more in a routine I will really have to get back onto mystery shopping as this was a good way for me to earn extra money. This money was paying my debts off but will now be useful as my pay stops soon.
Off to wake the little girl as she has also been asleep this afternoon.'Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.'
