I am on a roll today. The vacuum sealer was still out and so were the bags so I have just portioned and sealed 3 kg of costco brazils, 3 lb of walnuts (costco) and 3 kg of roasted hazels. Ooh it was satisfying and now they have a much longer shelf life. I also divided up and sealed 3kg of AF barley and 3 packets went wrong in that the air returned so I had a good look and teeny bits were in the seal so I redid those and double sealed and so far so good, hey you live and learn. I also redid all my dried onions as I used the wrong bags ie a roll of bag plastic that I had in the cupboard, only it was only cheapo for wrapping stuff when I was ebaying and the air got back in. I used the correct bags second time around so far so good, 18 hours later
I bought that £30 foodsaver from qvc at least 8 years ago and it has been in a cupboard, except when I used it for sealing ebay stuff. I also had a stack of bags and bag material on a roll. The stuff the bags are made from is very thick and so I am only getting the correct ones in future. I don`t know the costco prices for the nuts but I must have saved a load of money today. No more bags left now
Last night I packed lemon slices but they hadn`t dried fully and they are in the fridge, lemon rind which was crunchy and is now in a lock and lock and also some eating apple slices which dehydrated very well. I am going to get a bigger vacuum sealer now and will lookinto vacuum packing flours as I can make a big saving by getting sacks
I am thinking that I need to organise my food storage so cupboard under the stairs here I come (tomorrow) dh can`t get into it as it is low so I`ll have to stack up lots of lock and locks or some such good boxes, anyway thinking cap on and no doubt it`ll come to me in my sleep as usual
We are off out to help dd later and muffins and rolls are baking. Dh is doing lunch, salad :rotfl:well at least he can make that0 -
So someone weighing 10stone 10lbs should eat 55grams, or almost five chicken breasts a day...? And this is the daily minimum. I shudder to think how many beans would make the equivalent of five chicken breasts. Has someone written software that can calculate all this for us?
Don't panic the amounts quoted there are for 50g of chicken breast not a whole one, you'd 'only' need 250g of chicken breast not 5 whole ones. Still more than I allow per portion when I do things like pasta bake but then there are 2 other mealsin the day.0 -
I have unstable blood sugar, so should eat protein at every meal. Attempts to calculate how much are worse than learning calculus, which would prevent me ever becoming a total vegetarian. An example, from http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/nutrition/a/protein.htm is:
Sounds easy enough, until you realise that food varies as to what percentage of its weight is protein. For example,

I'm not going to double-check those rather complicated calcs because ICBA but I do know that 55 grammes DOES NOT equate to five chicken breasts a day! 55 grammes is only about two ounces, for goodness sake. I reckon one chicken breast is likely weigh more than that. I read somewhere or other that for health a normal adult would need only about 100 grammes of protein a day0 -
Well its taken me since last night to catch back up with all thats going on, have had no internet for the week so have only be able to glance every now and again from my phone.
We are finally fully moved into new house and the old one is empty, cleaned and decorated. It has taken so long and the new house looks awful stuffed with boxes at evry corner but at least we are clear of the old one and I can give keys back today. At one point I never thought we would get it empty - in particular the huge double garage that was full to the brim with stuff!! But while OH was at work this weekend I hired a skip and did many runs to the tip and we got rid of loads - anything we have kept has fitted into two sheds in the garden.
But today i have also accepted that we will have to get rid of our larder fridge and freezer - they are taking up so much space and making the kitchen unliveable - so we will be left will just the small freezer and an integrated fridge freezer - which will have to do. Am hoping that maybe when we are settled I can sort sheds a bit more and sneak a small chest freezer in there
It has not been a money saving time at every turn I have spent loads and meals have been quick junk so I must get a hold of meals again quickly. Am hoping that if i can sell the fridge and freezer this week then I can use the money to pay for another kitchen wall cupboard which will make the kitchen more usable.
Where is grey queen? Hope she is ok and gailey too.0 -

chuffed I am right now. DH is on holiday from work so we have been to our local butchers/warehouse of meat fruit veg and dairy. Wow, bargains first thing in the morning. Buy 1 get one frees on packs of sausages, burgers, even on lamb breast joints. I guess it's what is left from last week/weekend that needs shifting. I'm not bothered as it's all gone in the freezer.
It's a 6 mile round trip so walking it with a toddler might be out of the question so it may be worth a bus trip next Monday. It will be ideal when little one gets to nursery, if I can walk there and back in 3 hours. I like a challenge!!
And like savabob says, every good thing you over come deserves a treat so I'm sat here with cuppa and a slice of date and walnut cake0 -
Congrats on your new home!! Time to roll up those sleeves.
By the way, when I first moved in here I lived on takeaway for about 2 weeks before I was able to find everything.0
