saveabobortwo, you are on fine form tonight, and made me lol! It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

I'm feeling rather virtuous tonight after using the 55p houmous (3 varieties, sun dried tom/normal/garlic and white bean, from mr t) and 9p bread (secretly seeded - kingsmill?) that I got in their whoopsies today to make a sandwich for the Mr's lunch tomorrow and 7 more for the freezer!
AND I gave him the last of it with the crusts for a supper snack! He was rather happy with thatOn the up

another question does anyone else do bulk shopping at somewhere like macro my partner is convinced it would work out cheaper but im just not sure he wont eat basic pasta although i have tried a few times to give it to him sneakily lol. Are plan is to have enough food for at least 3 months as i am disabled and unable to work and we rely on my partners wages topped up slightly with my benefits which im worrying about due to the ever changing system
I also buy their catering packs of grated mozzarella (I keep it in the freezer and just chip some off when I need it for pizzas), bacon (gets separated into smaller packs and frozen) and some invisible devil on my shoulder also forces me to buy a huge bag of Haribo mini-marshmallows.
Makro is quite hit and miss, some things are cheaper at Tesco etc but there are some savings to be made especially if it's on offer.I normally have a look at the Makro Mail online before I go to see if there's anything to watch out for. We also get a 10% discount which helps as OH has a staff card (it was part of his pathetic redundancy package), daft thing is we didn't get a discount when he worked there but now, 15 years later, we do!Dum Spiro Spero0 -

'Ere...you wanna be careful Mardatha - or else she'll get that car packed complete with translation dictionary and the Fat Knacker and be heading oop North to 'ee with a carload of it that shes trying to get rid of (I'll amend that to "generously share with you"):rotfl::rotfl:0 -
In fact - never mind the translation dictionary - she could bring me instead (as I've never met an accent yet I cant understand) and I'll be that "dictionary"...

I read that - enjoyed it, but it was only really doable if you were single and lived in a city. And hadn't she paid all her rent/bills upfront (can't remember)? Not sure I'd hitch-hike everywhere either, but that's probably because I've watched too many horror films
Still a good read though, and made you think - I loved the idea of going to lectures at the university and staying for the free food afterwards!
Yea its not really a pound a day because it excludes her rent. She talks about a landlady in the book so i think all her bills are included in the rent too.
I could never manage it because i've got a 30 mile trip into newcastle for work each day, she was very lucky to be able to cycle or walk around bristol. you gotta be brave to hitch hike!
Since i've read it i have looked for free events and found a couple but not with free food unfortunatly!Aug £10 a day £0/£10000 -
what do you all use to store things like pasta and rice? My plan is to get it from macro in bulk and shop ahead if that makes sense but have nothing to store it all in was thinking along the lines of weigh and scoop tubs but have no idea where i could get them from.
We use those large glass or plastic jars which are used in sweet shops to sell their sweets. Some confectionary shops may be prepared to let you have their empties. They hold a fair amount and we've found that because they're designed to store food you don't end up with that "plastic" flavour which can sometimes taint food stored longterm if you use other types of large plastic containers.0 -

If fish smells of fish, then it's not fresh
I have another pearl of wisdom that's similar, but not food-related...but it's probably not a good topic first thing in the morning0
