To be fair FTM what business is it of hers whether you can afford it or not?! Nosey woman.

I really wish I could get over my bird phobia because I could then have chickens but....NOT A CHANCE!!!!:eek::eek::eek:The OH got home the other morning to find a bloody crow in his living room. Jesus, I would have totally freaked. Told him if he hadnt been there I would have locked up the house and left. I hate birds and crows are the worst! Must have fallen down the chimney. Yep, I really dont like birds. Give me a spider any day.

I would be gutted if something happened to FK and I didnt know.

Someone suggested the John Lewis card so I have now acquired one of these. The lady at work got £75 back from it! She does all her spending on it. I told the OH I would get him a card on my account if he wanted and he said not until he had read all the terms and conditions. He can be flipping anal at times! :D

I also text my mum to tell her about the whole waitrose thing. She only admitted that she shops there when she goes to the city!!! My mum who spends all her time in CS and boot sales :D

Kittie, for cloned meat. as much as i love meat, i'd rather go veggie than eat frankenstein meat.

yes me too but I am equally shocked by the fact that milk and cheese will be affected. cloned cows can still be free range and eat organic, so that milk will be called organic. I`ll be interested in finding out what the soil assoc stance will be on this

This is going to be incredibly difficult or even impossible to avoid. Think offspring from cloned parents/grandparents and cloned dna way way back down the line, so interbreeding becomes the invisible norm

Big business has won, yet again

And r.a.i.n.b.o.w. When I lost my boy cat it turned out that a family down the road has found him outside their house. He wasnt used to roads and even though it was a county road the boy racers were a nightmare. He used to go and play with their cat. They put him in a box with a rose and buried him and then put more roses on his grave and a notice in the shop. I was near hysterical when I realised what had happened but am forever grateful to them. They even let me visit him whenever I wanted.

I am concerned that organic and free range will be affected by this.

This cloned/genetically modified meat/animal produce is really worrying.

GM is probably relatively easy to avoid if you chose organic produce, but cloned will be difficult I would imagine, as a cloned cow could be organic I would think???

Not sure how I feel about cloned animals - my gut reaction is yuk, but i'm going to try and have a good read before making up my mind. If anyone pulls up anything informative and reliable could you post or pm me please?? Also about the organic aspect??

    Thanks,

The thought of cloned meat turns my stomach. I am now on day 4 of a meatless diet. I have cut down on my meat intake over the last few months so it is not such a big deal. I am enjoying it and don't think I will go back to eating meat or fish.

My potato plants are looking good. Looking forward to my first crop. My courgette plants have little courgettes on them which is really exciting. I sowed some more lettuce and some carrots this afternoon. It is good to see the soil moist. The rain was badly needed.

ANYWAY I'm glad yourOH has had a bonus. I wish mine had. No increase in pay for 5 years and no overtime for over 12 months because of the recession. Our heating oil has gone up by 40% and diesel for the car to get to work has gone up to £1.45 a litre. Food price is up too. We are scraping by month by month.

I posted because I was happy, and because we've had/continue to have such a rough time, and because it's good to have something nice happen for a change.

Living with a child with a mental illness and being her registered carer 24/7 is both heartbreaking and exhausting. Having s0d all money on top of that is a constant worry. I'm trying to grow my own veg this year to help with increasing food costs, which is why I'm so excited about the greenhouse. I now have a better chance of succeeding.

I wasn't trying to rub anyone's nose in it, I was sharing my good news with people who I thought would understand.

Hippeechiq, no need to explain. You certainly deserve something to be excited about. I was so pleased when I read your post.

It's great when you have something nice happen out of the blue like that. I don't think are many people on here who would begrudge you this Hippeechiq...and any that do aren't worth bothering with. Good luck with the greenhouse, This is my second year with mine, it's only a 4 shelf plastic one but I love it!

I don't post very often (though I do love reading this thread) but I'm feeling a little bit traumatised today...after 31 years of having children attend one school or another, the end of an era has arrived because except for a few revision classes and some exams, my youngest little treasure, has now left school. Feels very odd.

I'm still wondering why it is more cost effective to clone animals than to breed them normally? It must be quite a palaver, and they'd need laboratory services, which don't come cheap. I understand that when humans have in vitro fertilisation they have to go through hormone treatments to help the process. Hormones are banned in animals producing organic foods - yet apparently not if they are in their system before birth? My objection to the whole process is just a gut reaction that 'it ain't natural'.

I looked at Ceridwen's link to the Vegetarian Society and have decided to make at least some of my main meals Vegetarian every week. If I can work up a good repertoire I may give up meat altogether. That 'Zen Habits' Guy Leo reckons you only need about ten different recipes to go completely vegetarian. You can add more as you go. Now that DS has left home I can eat what I like, for the first time ever :D

Yes, it does feel very odd. My oldest started school in 1981, so 30 years of continuous school for my children, until the youngest left Sixth Form today. I remember dashing indoors to get the camera to take a picture of the oldest with his slipper bag and lunch box all ready for school. It seems like two lifetimes ago.
