Do excuse me whilst I go into the corner and have a "bit of a moment."

Softstuff great news about your trip and your OH sounds a treasure.
    )

Why do it hiding in a corner, we can gather together in the middle and all have a bit of one!

My hubby is a prince among men. I was bound to find him one day given that I kissed enough frogs. I can't think of a bit of him I'd change :o

I too get thunder-head - have previously been called weird about this!
I get these too. In fact last year when the weather was so changable DH compared me to a cow in a field, i.e I was lying down at the approach of a storm. He is still living that one down lol.

    aww that's lovely :)

Kittie, for cloned meat. as much as i love meat, i'd rather go veggie than eat frankenstein meat.

Smiley, It's awful isn't it. I have to be really careful while walking my dog now, he's been attacked while on his lead three time by dogs off their lead, twice by spaniel types and once by two beagles. All unprovoked but now it's changed him unfortunately, he used to love running around with other dogs but now he's scared, understandably so.

SDG, me too, i have paracetamol in my bag permanently. I hate it when we need a storm but it clears up, it affects me all day after.

Hmm, going back to the Waitrose discussion, I had a mooch around their website. It all looks good, high sounding phrases etc and I'm sure they are better than most. They have a ban on GM products although in one place they say that they are looking at the options for animal feed given the increasing worldwide trend to the use of GM products. They can trace every bit of meat back to the producer - fine but it doesn't actually say how the stuff is produced other than saying their producers are committed to high standards of animal welfare - at least Red Tractor standard. They do say that their entry level chickens are raised in barns with a much lower stocking rate than industry standard and 50% more hours of darkness.

Why is it so hard to find out what you are really eating? All the supermarkets are basically saying Trust us. I think Waitrose is probably more trustworthy than others - but can you be sure they won't be selling cloned meat? I'm not sure. And there's nothing to say that just because they can trace their milk back to British producers it couldn't come from super dairies with 4000 cows kept permanently indoors - all to the highest welfare standards, of course.

Presumably organic status would preclude cloned animals? Or would it? Very confused.

I know that there are a lot of people who don't have the luxury of doing anything but buying at the lowest price and that's why it's so important to keep campaigning about minimum standards. I could buy organic but what about people who can't? I don't want to retreat into a bunker.

Sorry if this is taking the thread off track - I might go and have a mosey round the green and ethical moneysaving threads
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

cloned meat is being sneaked into the supermarkets by the end of summer :eek::eek:

This absolutely horrifies me as it will not be labelled as such

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/8415170/Meat-from-offspring-of-cloned-animals-to-go-on-sale-in-UK.html

I think the writer of the article is confusing cloning and genetic modification. I have a low opinion of the scientific worth of a lot of pieces written for the papers by journalists without any scientific knowledge of the latest hot topic. I am not a fan of cloning but this article is intended to cause a reaction, which is what sells newspapers.

What we need, instead of a knee jerk reaction by newspapers and politicians anxious to pretend they can reverse a trend, is some properly researched scientific opinion. What is the reasoning behind cloning?

We've been cloning fruit for years, by taking cuttings to grow another plant, hoping to reproduce the quality of the original. It's when they start talking about putting fish genes into tomatoes or pineapple genes into strawberries that I worry. The introduction of something other than what the thing appears to be. Not helpful if you have an anaphylactic reaction to the invisible, unexpected ingredient. At least you don't get that with a clone.

    Then look up:

    www.vegsoc.org/

    www.savvyvegetarian.com

    websites for loadsa recipes

(NB - did get a bit confused at latest "front page" on Vegetarian Society site - a Fish campaign?????? Whats that about? Its the Vegetarian Society - not a Pescetarian Society......)

Thanks for the links Ceridwen. The Fish Campaign is probably for people like a well educated, middle class friend of mine who is quite proud of being a 'Vegetarian' but still eats fish! It explains that vegetarians don't eat fish.

Been missing a bit (a week) and the thread has grown massively.
Sorry not up to speed with everyone's news.
Hope the celestial watering can has been over your way GreyQueen. We had a downpour yesterday and all the plants look the better for it.

Another Bank Holiday? Eek..can anyone tell me if it also applies to Scotland please?

Well the banks recognise it as a holiday so they will be shut but, it is a normal working day for my OH and our DD will be at school so unfortunately I don't think you can count on it being a holiday in Scotland.

Having a manic weekend. Im minding mums dog who is a mad spaniel, cute though. I take him for walks but dont let him off his lead (long stretchy type one). I find other dog owners very lax over control of their dogs. Where I live is quite rough and to have a staffy type dog is a status symbol usually for inadequate losers who wander round with their hands stuffed down their trousers.

Have managed to keep to my £30 food budget by visiting 4 different shops, Poundland, Iceland, Home & Bargain and Asda. Takes ages though and Im lucky as I can park in Asda and go between the shops and put heavy bags in as I go. Its getting more and more difficult though to keep to budget and eat properly. Managed to include fresh fish and chicken. Have started buying frozen veg as its cheaper and doesnt go off.

My poor car needs a new clutch. Cheapest quote is £280:eek: I was considering getting a newer car as mine is getting on a bit but with the way jobs are it will be better to pay a few hundred on repairs than a few thousand on a newer one.

Greyqueen - I have a bizarre brain too. I have a very handy trick that beats your thunder headache and is MS too. Portable speed traps give me a shooting pain in my head. I m not a girl racer but its easy to be doing 33 in a 30 zone and get done. I also break electronic doors, tills and pacemakers!
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

Because the government never tell the public the whole truth about anything, it's wrong, but it's the same the world over.

Rainbow & SmileyT big hugs to you both :grouphug:
Softstuff what a star your hubby is :) although I'm very sorry to read about your friend.

My OH has his moments. As some of you know, money is very tight for us at the moment, and with DDs mental illness it's been a dark 24 months for us - with not much happiness involved.
ANYWAY OH is a civil servant and because they've received no pay rise for the past 2 years, each employee has received a one off, (small) lump sum of money, and as a surprise, he has bought me a large, build-your-own, tubular framed, pvc covered walk in greenhouse!!
    I'm absolutely thrilled :T

Re chickpeas I discovered a nice Chana Masala type dish a few months back, very similar to yours Redlady but with Coconut Milk added. Makes it lovely & creamy. Served over rice, makes a nutritional but cheap meal.
I use them in a Vegetarian Bean Curry recipe I found last year and also a Moroccan inspired chicken (thigh) dish, using various spices, dried apricots and chickpeas which is very nice. I only "discovered" them last year :o and absolutely love them.
