I have had all night to think about that cloned meat and also the milk that is now doing the rounds. True frankenstein food imo. The winners will be the farmers and butchers who can offer fully traceable meat and milk. It isn`t any good just saying that it comes from so and so farm, they have to be able to say that they do not produce cloned meat or milk. I already use smal local producers via local food direct and I am going to see what is what re the cloned stuff
I have to say that no dogs should be loose unless in a designated dog walking area. Our border collie dog, on a lead ,was once slashed across the belly by a loose great dane, whose owner was very close by and who called the dog away. She needed lots of stiches and her underside was hanging open. Who cares if they respond to the owner or not, they should not be able to run towards anyone0 -
cloned meat is being sneaked into the supermarkets by the end of summer :eek::eek:
This absolutely horrifies me as it will not be labelled as such
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/8415170/Meat-from-offspring-of-cloned-animals-to-go-on-sale-in-UK.html
Its been obvious - unfortunately - that this was on the cards right from "Dolly the Sheep" time (ie the first experiments with cloning animals).
My initial thoughts were "Oh ...well...I dont eat meat anyways...." - but then went on to think "Ceridwen...think on it...where do you think milk and the products thereof come from......cows....and so even veggies will have to take care once they let this genie out of the bottle....".
I'm pretty organic in the way I eat - so I know I can trust my own milk/cheese/etc that I buy...but no-one has total control over the way they eat and my parents feed me ready meals when I visit them and my best friend knows/cares about organic but is so poor that I know she cant afford to pay that "organic price premium" on their food.
Thats the thing these peeps (ie the ones who start off this cloned animals/g*netically m*dified food scenarios don't think of) - ie that even they personally are not exempt from being affected by these things they let loose on us - because even they personally won't be able to totally control the quality of the food that goes into their own mouths (they will be fed meals by people who arent "aware"/they will eat vegetables and fruit that got accidentally contaminated by the g.m. food). That is what puzzles me most actually. I know a lot of people are so motivated by money that they simply don't care and will do whatever they require to maximise their own personal income - but you would think they would have the nous to realise that they themselves are going to be exposed to this stuff they let loose on the rest of us....0 -
I wonder whether the cloned meat will be able to be passed off as free range? I want to cook more veggie but need some really good tasty receipes. I quite like the Paupers Cookbook as their spicy chickpeas are lush.0

Redlady_1 Please share the recipe for spicy chickpeas. My dh loves them but I never do anything very interesting with them, and have certainly never come across a chickpea recipe that it 'lush':D
r.a.i.n.b.o.w and smileyt sending big ((((hugs)))) to you both. So traumatic to go through those things. Hope you manage to get rid of the images soon. I am shuddering thinking about all of it!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Cheers Cerwiden. I will have a nose through those and see what I can find. OH bought me a Rose Elliot book for Christmas and some of the recipes have been hit and miss.
Spicy Chickpeas...you can use it just as a snack too.
450g chickpeas
S & P
3 onions, chopped
3 tablespoons oil (I dont use this much but just adapt to what you want)
3 cloves garlic - chopped
1 tbsn cumin seeds
1 tbsn coriander seeds
1/2 tspn chilli powder
1 tbsn tomato puree
bunch of fresh coriander or parsley (I use parsley because I grow shed loads of it)
Cook the chickpeas. I wont write all about doing this as I am sure you already know.
In a heavy-based frying pan (I find any frying pan is good enough) large enough to take the chickpeas, fry the onions in the oil for a few mins and then add the garlic. After a min or two, add the spices and fry for 1 min, then sitr in the tomato puree and cook for 1 min. Put in the chickpeas, stir round and heat through. Sprinkle with chopped coriander or parsley and black pepper before serving.
Job jobbed...enjoy. The spices really bring them alive.0 -
Urrghhh, thank goodness it's Friday and a three-day weekend approaches because I'm one tired little bunny and could cheerfully go straight back to sleep.
 I'm also cross as I came home from work yesterday to find a letter, opened it and gave it a quick glance; 'twas from a bank that I'd arranged to have take over 2 existing mini cash ISAs (don't get excited, they're neither exactly flush) and combine them into one. I was expecting this as had had letters from each separate provider that they'd been req by the Bank to transfer them over. So, laid the letter on the table, went to the lottie and didn't look at it properly until later in the evening (esp the ISA certificate which was the 2nd page) and...and.....they've only got the balance from one of them. The smaller one, as ill-luck would have it. Where's my blimming money gone?! Grr, that's another place I'll have to be at 9 am on this busy morning. Honestly, the world and it's wife cautioned me about a certain Spanish-owned bank and I watch my account with them like a hawk and they never put a foot wrong, and this shower.....
r.a.i.n.b.ow ((hugs)) and I'm sorry you've had a horrible time. I'd've been horribly upset about it all, esp the dead cat. Late last autumn, I was digging my lottie veg patch with a fork, lifted it out of the ground and...........I'd impaled a buried toad right thru the body. And it looked at me and I freaked. Was so upset that it preyed on my mind for days, couldn't sleep and I was too scared to dig properly until March when they'd all crawled off to the ponds to breed. Hence you can see why I will not be able to deploy a mole trap.
maryb well done on the improvements in your eyes, you must be so thrilled. I have filed the fact about the gingko away.
I have annual eyetests and my June one is booked already. My consultant said I should as my meds and other conditions could have adverse affects on my eyesight. For peeps without certain conditions (or family histories) 2 yearly is recommended.
I've worn glasses and, rarely, contacts since I was 13 and have short-sight and astigmatism. I can recall being in another part of the country and chatting to my then-optician when he tested my eyes. He was furious that free eyetests for all had just been done-away with (this would've been the very early 1980s). He said that he had personally detected a 16 year old girl with such high pressure in her eyes that he'd had to send her straight to hospital; she was in grave danger of imminent blindness. And he's found a med student in her 20s with a completely-symptomless tumour in her eye; it was on the verge of penetrating into her brain and would've been fatal and untreatable. She was admitted immediately; she lost her eye but escaped with her life.
Last year I had an additional service; a digi photo of each eye. Recall looking at them on his computer as he talked me thru the image and feeling very protective and humble towards these orange-y globes with their fragile nerves and blood vessels. For some reason the colour and veining recalled Chinese Lantern plants to me....but I am a bit weird.;)
Well, better fix myself some breakfast and throw some stuff in a bag; going to the Bank, to work, the coach station and then my parents' place for the weekend.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thank you so much. I may even be able to get my dd1 who loathes chick peas, to eat these. I have managed to feed her HM falafels loads of times and she still hasn't figured out what they are made from!!!! A little chilli sauce works wonders:DFather Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

I reckon you could fool her with these rosie. Tell her they are a twist on chilli
I find chickpeas can taste like cardboard but these are really nice. Even the OH (who to be honest is a bit new age in some ways) likes them and has even ASKED for them!
Not as much as he asks for Twinks mind you:cool:

To weigh in to the eye debate - I had my eyes tested (free using a voucher from work as I use computers) and was saddened to discover that I now need reading glasses, but was impressed at the way the test was carried out and the photos of my eyes are amazing. I was also pleased that I was able to easily persuade the sales assistant that the £25 range of glasses would suit me far better than the £250 ones
I read a lot and can't wait to be able to bring books closer to me again, roll on next week!! Reading packets in the supermarket could be good too, as I'm going from vegetarian to vegan and am scrutinising the packets for milk/egg products.
