Firewall for Win7?
Comments
-
Unless you require full control of incoming and outgoing connections (most dont) then windows inbuilt firewall is fine
Unlike the early XP version, the Windows firewall in Vista/7 supports this and is in fact very comprehensive. Unfortunately the default for outbound is "all outbound connections that do not match a rule allowed"
Its downfall is that for the average user it's probably too advanced to change the setting to "block all outbound unless allowed by rule" and then to define security policy/rules for allowed apps, protocols, ports etc.604!0 -
Just use the fwall on your router and the one that comes with Windows 7.

I've got Avast as my AV program so I don't need the Comodo one.
Probably a daft question, but what does the Defense mode do?
Comodo keeps track of certain registries etc being changed. When they do it asks you whether or not to allow it. Far too much hassle for my liking (And most people wouldnt have a clue when to allow and when not to allow which makes it useless for most):idea:0 -
Why? State your source?
Nice start my friend .. .. .. you might want to do just a little bit of work first

So go for the basic settings and just let it do it's thing then.
Sounds like a plan to me.
One thing I didn't see on the list (unless I've missed it) was the free version of the PC Tools firewall. Didn't they test that one?Richie-from-the-Boro wrote: »Nice start my friend .. .. .. you might want to do just a little bit of work first

Those like ' Toxteth_OGrady ' who want both worlds, particularly the control of the outbound rules, can use a ' skin ' for the excellent Win7 built in firewall.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I should have given the more clued up an opportunity to read up on PrivateFirewall, for the less clued up don't read it it will make your knees wobbly and your eyes bleed.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Thanks for that - I'll read up and risk my knees/eyes. Maybe I'll be lucky and only get wobbly eyes and bleeding knees...
(I've tried Comodo firewall on the netbook, but unsurprisingly it slowed it down dramatically)0 -

It is too much of a nightmare for my liking. So my general thought is if its too much for me, its definitely too much for those asking for help
I also dont think you can create a rule until somethings installed. Many programs connect to the net mid-install:idea:0 -

It's light on footprint and very light on cycles, as stated in my earlier post it uses the windows own firewall, it merely skin's it in a way that can be understood by us lesser mortals. The process monitor on the main screen is a ' one click ' adjustment to stop any prog going external, and its instantly reversible, a fully controllable little user intervention.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
