Did you order line and broadband as a combined package ??, if so and OR have advised your service provider that you cannot have broadband due to lineplant limitations, then it possible that the order (for both line and broadband) has been cancelled, this would give the symptoms you are getting, No dialtone, unable to report the number as faulty (because it doesnt exist) and calls to the number get 'the number you have dialed has not been recognised' message, as the BT rep has asked to help, give them the order number you got from BT, or call BT or go online, I think they have a track my order facility online (which may not work if they have cancelled the order), but a call to them with the order number shoud enable them it tell you if the order is still valid or cancelled
Was ordered as a combined package, have a dialling tone but cannot make/recieve calls or use the the online fault reporting system as number doesn't exist. Calls to India have fallen on deaf ears.0 -
have you looked into sattelite broadband?0

UPDATE: Had a call on my mobile from BT this afternoon, from what I could understand from this guys basic grasp of the English language was.........
"we will contact you within 10 days".
HELLO BT! are you listening?
I have no telephone!
I have no broadband!
Talk about incompetence, as Victor Meldrew would say "I don't bloody belieeeeve it!"
Now where is the number for the Samaritans? oh yes........ I dont have a phone

Some good news, phone now working and broadband promised for 18th April (should've been 7th March). I wont believe it until it actually happens - watch this space.
Update: BT called yesterday (12/04/11) to say broadband would be activated sometime today (up to midnight), since this has been going on for 5 weeks I wont be holding my breath.0 -
Finally resolved! Broadband now working after BT upraded lines, activation is 39 days late but at least its done. I'm pleased the work has been done, but why oh why do BT fob you off with bull****? I've heard so many lies from them, I was even told it was impossible for me to get broadband in my location. Then along comes a 'proper' engineer, says the system needs upgrading, spends 2 days sorting it..... and it all works!0

Just count yourself lucky that you didn't try and get BB via another provider. It would NEVER have been sorted out.
There are many small communities without broadband. It isn't a human right.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
