Virgin are unable to supply a service :(
  • It's not good is it. About the only final suggestion I think I can make is to do one of the following:

    1. Try one of Three's MiFi devices instead of a dongle. This can boost signal strength
    2. Find out where the Three cell is, and look into getting an antenna put on the roof directionally aligned to it (dongles are omnidirectional so as to work well on the move, but won't necessarily give you the best signal)

Dacs actually delivers 2 telephony services over 1 cable pair, if for arguments sake your area is serviced by a 5 pair cable, then normally 5 people could have the phone, a 6th person applies for service, if the cost of upgrading the 5 pair cable is uneconomic, then one of the existing customers is DACS with the new customer, this can be repeated so theoretically 10 end user on 5 dacs/cable pairs, but if any one of the existing 5 has a non dacs compatible service (like broadband) then their line cannot be made dacs to give someone else service (dacs isnt like old shared service, its 2 digital channels and you cannot have dacs and adsl on the same cable pair.
In some respects you could consider yourself lucky to even get telephony at the normal price,if the cable was full with no suitable dacs host, you could have been denied any service at all, or given an estimate for upgrading the cable at your expense (usually the cost of the work minus a BT contribution of £4000) It may seem unfair, but if say to provide a line capable of giving you broadband would cost BT £10,000, you would have to pay £6000, so getting dacs although denying you broadband could have saved you thousands of ££,
If you chose a non BT ISP BT would get no more return on that money spent, compared to what they get for the 'line rental' anyway, so if they get no return why would they invest to make the line broadband compatible ? even if you did use BT as the ISP at £6/month (wholsale price) it would be a long time before the money spent on the upgraded cable was paid for and even then you may move to another non BT isp after a year so bt could spend £4000 and get £72 back, this isnt taken into consideration though when deciding the economics of the situation....it may seem harsh but BT isnt a charity its a business, if you can get mobile broadband thay may be your only choice,

I thought there was a glimmer of hope earlier in the week when BT contacted me to say they were reconsidering the Broadband issue.

    NOT SO!

This morning I find that the phone is not working, so I go to BT's online fault reporting. It asks for the number with the fault, everytime I enter the number it say 'invalid number', and I cant proceed any further.

If I dial my landline number from a mobile it says 'number not recognised'.

What the hell is BT playing at !!!!!!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys.

    Jayne.

PS I am able to use my '3' dongle but cant use my mobile phone for 0800 numbers.

Not sure what they are playing at you'll have to deal with them.

I have a friend who has a rooftop 3G antenna. If they use the USB dongle they get no access from inside the house at all. Works outside but that's rather useless so they have purchased a 3G aerial and router to create a 2.5Mbs quite reliable wi-fi connection.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

In BT's defence, this might actually be quite positive - they might have found a spare pair and are trying out swapping them around resulting in the loss of the phone service for a while.

You could always use your dongle to look up an 0800 buster number to dial the 0800 number that you need to call.

Its now been 30 hours since my phone went off, so I dont think BT are sorting my internet. I have a dialling tone, but any number I dial say's "number not recognised" and I cant report it online because the automated system says "invalid number".

I did however bite the bullet and call the BT centre (in India I assume), took best part of an hour being passed from piller to post. Told me my number was incorrect (invalid) and eventually they cut me off, so no success there.

I've managed to put in a complaint via email, but so far I've not had a response other than an acknowledgement of the complaint.

I really dont know what to do next and its driving me nuts!

Did you order line and broadband as a combined package ??, if so and OR have advised your service provider that you cannot have broadband due to lineplant limitations, then it possible that the order (for both line and broadband) has been cancelled, this would give the symptoms you are getting, No dialtone, unable to report the number as faulty (because it doesnt exist) and calls to the number get 'the number you have dialed has not been recognised' message, as the BT rep has asked to help, give them the order number you got from BT, or call BT or go online, I think they have a track my order facility online (which may not work if they have cancelled the order), but a call to them with the order number shoud enable them it tell you if the order is still valid or cancelled
