Debenhams grrrrr

Hi I hope this is in the right place. I purchased a Tripp suitcase from Debenhams.com specifically for using in the cabin of an airoplane. It said this info on it by the way. However to my absolute fury i used the case this week. No problem flying out as i had already booked my boarding pass on line. Coming back i didn t have chance too so had to check in. To cut a long story short the " gir l" said i had to pay £30 :eek: as it was too big. This madam had all the answers. I got it in the sizing thing but then she said it needed to go in easily- !!!!!!, was only the wheels stopping it. To say i was furious is an understatement:mad:. Took said case back to Debenhams as its no good to me and i wanted compensation off someone. A i see it this case did not match up to what it said it should. Debenham s didn t want to know tho the guy tried. He then started waving a leaflet at me stating plane sizes for cases BUT i never recieved this when i ordered. These cases aren t cheap. So basically does anyone have an idea of the law in this case, or should i go to the Office of fair trading etc ? Sorry its long but needed to explain fully. Thanks.

Debenhams don't have to refund you as there is nothing wrong with the case. And what did you want compensation for?!

I didnt say there was anything wrong with the case but its no good to me as its not fit for the purpose i bought it for, and as it stated when i bought it that it was the right size for cabin luggage which it clearly wasn t. The compensation i wanted was the £30 i wasted paying to fetch the case home. How was i supposed to know that i have to check sizes that various planes allow. It should be one standard size for all.0 -

It's not one standard size for all though, that's the point.
I bought a bag for hand luggage but first checked with the airline we always use, that it was going to be within their limit.
Which airline did you travel with?
ETA : A quick search on google gave me this :
Hand luggage size is restricted by the Department for Transport and must be no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm including straps, wheels and handles. Unhelpfully, some airlines restrict hand luggage size even further so it is important to check your airline's website for the latest information. The main airlines and their hand luggage allowances are listed below:
British Airways 56 x 45 x 25
Virgin Atlantic - 56 x 36 x 23
Ryanair - 55 x 40 x 20
easyJet - 56 x 45 x 25
bmi - 55 x 40 x 23
flybe - luggage must be no more than 10kgTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

Fly-flaming-be lol. This leaflet that Debenhams waved infront of me ( after the event ) says all the sizes that various planes accept and flybe says 50 35 23. Mines a few cm s longer but width is less.

Virgin Atlantic - 56 x 36 x 23
Ryanair - 55 x 40 x 20

I got my carry on into the cage for EasyJet at Gatwick and the woman then insisted it had to go in sideways (which it did) but because it doesn't have a handle on the side, I couldn't get it out! Took me and the other half ages to get the bleeding thing out. In the end, we had to turn the cage upside down.
They let me on though, the rules only say it has to fit in the cage, it doesn't mention getting it out afterwards!"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
OP...Try escalating and/or complaining to Rob Templeman, Debs Chief Executive, via sending him an email to rob.templeman@debenhams.com.
Good luck and hope this helps.0 -
won't make you feel any better but my mil bought a 'hand luggage' case from matalan (that had a big sticker on it saying it was the correct size for hand luggage) then when she got to the airport they wouldn't let her take it as the wheels were sticking out. this was the only luggage she was taking so she had to phone a friend and get her to bring another bag asap!0

I squeezed mine in but only halfway as i thought i might not be able to get it out again, but i could tell she wasn t going to back down or anything when she said yes but its got to fit in easily :mad::mad:. You were lucky lol
