Im owed Money by Orange...

If you want the answer to this question, ask Orange. Only they know why.
If you want your money back do what was advised above, i.e. phone your bank, quote DD guarantee and demand immediate refund of the erroneous DD.0 -
Listen flip face, we have read your post , you gave them your bank details for them to activate the direct debit (how else are they going to deduct money from it?) , when you recieved the bill it would advise that monies would be deducted in two weeks time, at that point you could cancel the DD by informing the bank, when orange did deduct the money, you still could apply for a refund under the DD garauntee scheme. If you wanted to sit back and wait for months for someone else to resolve the issue for you (which should never have been in the 1st place) then why chew our heads off?
Whilst Orange may have made an error, it does not appear you did much to help yourself.
Sorry the answer is not wrapped up in cotton balls for you :T
So why does it seem your the only one who doesnt get it!
I did not wait months to do something, I did something the day I recieved a statement from orange. I cancelled in January. The Bill was sent to my door in Febuary to be paid. I made enquiries and I was told to wait up until next month (march) to get my refund.
Like I also said, there was no DD setup as far as I knew because I was informed there was none. This was confirmed when I made enquires about it like I said. So if Orange said I have no account with them to take money why would I need to inform my bank?
Like I said I have cancelled DD before WITHOUT having to inform my bank. I assumed it was a admin error of some sort. It was not only when they DID take money during febuary that I realised that nothing had actually been done.
It is now April.
Like I said I have written letters and made phone calls between then.
Hope fully you now understand.
Clapping at your own response is actually quiet laughable and to suggest your answer was some how unpretty was laughable too. Its just that you just didnt get it.0 -

Only they know why indeed which they havent enlightened me to as of yet.
I did not know I could demand a refund from my bank it self. I will look into that. Thanks0 -
Google for 'direct debit guarantee'0

At the risk of getting my head eaten by the op...
I doubt Orange offer a free trial, it was probably a 7 day cooling off period, and even if you did not use the phone at all there would still be a pro rata'd line rental to be payed. Eg 1/30th of what the monthly cost would have been.
That's how it is certainly on O2 anyway and I can only imagine it's the same, "free trial" just sounds so off for a network considering how a returned phone is an instant loss as it can not obviously be sold on as new.
So from my understanding you did owe them something, if they billed you wrong or not I don't know, like others suggested, direct debit guarantee is your best bet at getting money back if it was over billed.0 -

Your post is quiet laughable, do you think the people here are stupid?
The bill arrived through the post and it would not have been for 1 month now would it? (come on tell the truth!)
The bill arrives 2 weeks before the money is deducted from your bank account via direct debit.
As the bills are paid in advance with call charges in arrears , the 1st bill would have been for 6 weeks.
So Orange advised you that they were take money from your account, this you dispute is correct, so you contact the bank to advise them that the money is not due and they stop the DD, the day you notice the DD has been taken you advse the bank and they refund it, the argument then is with the bank and Orange.
If Orange believe you then still owed monies, the debt collection team would then get involved.
I must ask why get the handset and then only to return it the very next day?0 -

No its fine. Your right. It wasnt a "free trial" as in the literal sense. What I meant was the phone network gives you a period usually one or two weeks for you to return it from the purchasing date without charge. Thats why I descibed it as a free trial.
The only thing that cannot be refunded so in which case I will pay for is the VAT and itemised billing. I didnt have to pay for any type of line rental. Thanks.0 -
could be simple explanation, maybe he didnt like it, changed his mind
Indeed, something just seems very irrational about the whole story the OP has submitted.
When you purchase a phone on contract it's not a 5 minute affair.
I wonder if the bill was actually cancelled as informed and the poster was actually billed for insurance

Usually or in fact? 7 days cooling off period is mandatory only for distance selling. Some shops may offer free returns, but AFAIK it is not the case for Orange shops. No its fine. Your right. If you buy contract you pay regardless of using the airtime or not. So, if they did not offer free returns, but accepted the phone back, this looks like some free trial in which case you have to pay for days pro-rata.The only thing that cannot be refunded so in which case I will pay for is the VAT and itemised billing. I didnt have to pay for any type of line rental.0
