I have found dresses I like but the one I love I have not seen in the flesh. It is online. I don't know anyone that has bought a wedding dress online. Anyone know of any horror stories, websites to avoid? Or success stories or websites I should be looking at.
I can't afford inshore prices as they are £100 - £300 more than buying online direct from the dressmakers!
Any help appreciated!
Hi Charlotte!
Are you looking at Chinese sites for your dress? Or second hand from eBay etc. I got my dress second hand for a bargain price! :money: if you are looking at China, there have been mixed reviews. I don't even think the company makes that much difference, some people are impressed, others not so much. Especially if you are expecting an exact copy.:T0 -

I am home from work ill.
Am meant to be going to Oxford tomorrow too...
One seamstress finally got back to me about a bolero being made, she said around £150-200. Its a little more than I hoped, but she charges £19 an hour, so including sourcing material, and actual cost of stuff it doesn't seem too far off. Problem is she is london based (actually just down the road) but my dress is at my mums. Don't know what to do about it.
Also got a hair comb off ebay.I forgot to factor that in to my wedding jewellery, so only had £13 left for it. I managed to win it for £5.60 inc delivery, so happy about that!

I have been looking at Chinese makers, reason being I want a purple dress! And most of the sites will do in any colour. I've read loads of good reviews, and loads of bad ones. Most have said though that the more basic the bed the better they match the pictures. TBH I haven't had a good ebay browse in a while… Think I may have found something to do tonight!Completely out of my student overdraft March 2012! :rotfl:
Still searching for my first teaching post

What dress is the one you love? And what is your budget? Maybe we can find something similar. Quite a few people on the board are having a cadbury purple colour scheme, so there must be quite a few purple dresses out there.
Try creating a new thread- some people are really good at it! And have helped a few people find there perfect dress!:T0 -
Ugh I'm still ill. In Oxford atm, but really tired out. OH an friend have gone off to a museum, I have gone to have a cup of tea n a sit down!
On the bright side- OH box arrived today, and I absolutely love it! It looks great, I will post pics when I get home. It's also bigger/ deeper than I thought, so can fit loads in there! The postman knocked on the door at 7.30- on a Saturday!
My comb (I think) has also arrived.it was only dispatched yesterday, but can't think what else it can be! Unfortunately (or fortunately depending in how I am looking at it) the postman came to the door just as we were leaving (yes we had 2 deliveries this morning) so have been unable to check it.

It was an amazing experience!! I didn't want to leave! For anyone a size 18 or over.....perfect place to go, really excellent.
I got there and literally my hands were shaking. As she started to talk to me I was nearly crying I was so scared. I picked some out and after the first one (stunning) it started to get easier and after about 7 or 8 dresses I could have stayed there all day :rotfl:They have a long wedding coat which I put over each dress (the comfort coat as it is known as - to cover up the arms :rotfl:) and I DEFINITELY want one of those. There are 2 dresses I really like, more than my budget by a fair old way (one was about 450, one about 750) and the coat is about 350 so I need to do some serious thinking about what to do next .
However.......I said I would look at the samples just for a nosey and found a dress which is a tiny bit big but would be perfect for the registry office :T It was 150 so a little more than I wanted to pay as I now need a long or riding jacket length coat to go over it, but I am happy with it . I found that the structure of wedding dresses gave me a good figure and whilst I love the Moonmaiden Gothic clothing, it is very fluid and I'm not sure it would hold me in the way a dress can.
And it definitely isn't a traditional colour
And it means the shoes I bought (in teal!) definitely won't go.....ah well, a woman can never have too many shoes and they were only about 12 quid.
I do have a bit of a mission going on today with 2 of my lovely friends in Scotland....I will report back later....
It may mean a major diet though after seeing how small wedding dresses came up yesterday
Please post the piccy.........I'm still up for new ideas for the handfasting ceremony"Stay Wonky":D

YAY i am so glad you found something
have you looked here? http://www.bulletproofcupid.co.uk/pages/Plus.html
i esp like the red skirt and jacket
pic is on OHs phone so will take me the rest of the day to get it
i also swear by http://www.corsets-uk.com/simple-classic-sweetheart-long-line-white-satin-my-058-acp.html
it does come in other colours but pulls me in soooooo well its amazing i drop 5 inches off of my waist with it on so that may be a cheaper option
just out of interest did you try on joanne? The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50 -
aha - I recognise some of those items from my numerous trawls around ebay!! I like the dark red velveet riding jacket but it is too short (need bum, hips, tum covering!!)
Wellllllll, I had a bit of excitement yesterday as I hinted at! Kudos wedding shop in Edinburgh are selling 1 dress per day for £100. I am miles away and found the asle page by fluke. Even more of a fluke was that they have the Sonsie dress in the size, style and colour I have been looking at for months........and it was for sale from 10am yesterday......I sent them an email to ask if I could buy over the phone and they said yes, however anyone waiting at the door would get the dress over me. They said some had been sold on the dot of 10am on the phone but were fine with me doing this.
I have 2 very lovely friends who are in the process of moving to Edinburgh. They waited outside the shop from 9.30 and about 9.45 were let into the shop to keep warm! The owner said that I had the dress as nobody else was waiting and at 10am I phoned with my CC number! It was in the window and my friend sent me a photo of it there - she was so excited for me and said it looks amazing.
I guess now I have to hope it suits me - I think it will be a bit small but it will be the boot up the bum to lose a couple of stone before October. The registry dress needs taking in as it is so I will wait before doing anything with that. If it looks awful I can sell it on, can't see I will make a loss on it and then look again at the 2 favourites from my visit to the shop last week.
I adored the long bridal coat they have so am looking around at options for that as well. I might take a chance on a china seller and get one in ivory to go with my green dress and then one in dark wine for my handfasting dress.
I also realised that the teal of the shoes I got on ebay goes with the sage green of the dress (it is an Alexia bridesmaid dress in sage) and I can still do the flowers I was thinking of as the colour are ivory and peacock blue and green.
I don't think I tried on the Joanne dress.......I know I tried on Imogen, Jessica, Andrea and Sophie but I didn't look at the names on some of them. I might have done though - they were coming in to the changing room at a rate of knots at one point! :rotfl:
Corsets............drool............love corsets so much"Stay Wonky":D

ordered a Holy Clothing dark wine velvet coat to go over my handfasting dress.....think the hunt is complete! (as long as the coat looks ok!) That means my handfasting outfit with postage has cost me £175
I will wear a pair of black ballerina type pumps, will just get a cheap pair from a shop, won't spend more than a fiver. Now need hair accessory and bouquet.
Have ordered a floor length bridal coat in ivory (surprised myself there, never thought I'd go for a cream shade but the shop one looked stunning with the green of the dress) to go with the sage dress for the registry office.....need to do a load of measurements and fingers crossed it comes here ok. It's a UK company that does china stuff , they are bit like my big fat gourgeous wedding I think.
Decided to try to get my wine dress on.....nearly got stuck in it!! :rotfl: there is an over the bum zip, I thought - ignore that bit. There are back ribbons, I thought - ignore that bit. There is a zip up back panel with mega strong elastic on each side....I thought - right. Zip up the back panel and put the whole dress over your head, how much weight do I need to lose for it?
Ever tried getting a elasticated corsetted item on over your head? There were arms in the air and dress EVERYWHERE!!!!
I got it about 2/3 on and thought....oh, hell....I'm not sure this was a good idea.....:rotfl: and then thought - just keep going...... Anyway, I got it on and it fits........just......kind of......well, ok, it is 'on' but I wouldn't want to be the person trying to do the ribbon lacing over the back panel :rotfl: I knew it would be small as the Sonsie dresses apparently are small, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. 2 stone should really be a perfect amount for it so I am going to look to lose 2 stone by end of August and then take the other items to be taken in a little.
Well, that's the theory anyway.........I 'm not going to wear anything else to my handfasting than this dress as I LOVE it. If that means breathing in as it goes on and not breathing out until it comes off again, then that is what willhave to happen :rotfl:
Also ordered my registry bouquet........bit expensiveat £75  but it is a 1 off wire and glass long piece of 'art' in a way - doesn't have any flowers on it and the colours are perfect. As the button holes have cost me a fiver all in, I reckon I can treat myself. I've also seen the bouquet I want for the handfasting but that is £80 (all dried 'wooden' items in autumn colours) so I might try to make one myself that looks similar.
