Answer to the MOT problem? Start MOT tests at 1 year.

I refuse to believe that 100% of 1 and 2 year old cars are roadworthy, any more than the 3 year old ones.

Indeed. Most cars for the EU market have this, for cars only sold outside the EU why bother though?

In any case, that's just one reason why you'd want to clock the car. Still got things like a replacement second hand ECU to worry about.

Has to be said that we are living in 2011 now. It surely can't be that much of a ball-ache to design an odometer/speedo combination that can be flicked over from MPH to KPH and back at the flick of a switch?
I had it on a car I hired in New York State (and took over to Toronto). USA in miles, Canada in Km. I wish I had it on my current car for when I go over to Europe.

    Very difficult to tell a 10k from a 100k mile car at 3 years:eek:

You'd need to be pretty naive to be unable to tell the difference

In other words there isn't any real law which would be admissable in a court of law, since it would be simply your word against theirs. At the moment is is buyer beware as far as mileage is concerned, they don't even need to sign anything which shows they have checked the mileage against the DVLA database.

With grey imports it opens a whole new can of worms.

If the seller advertises the car as fifty thousand miles and it turns out to have done a hundred thousand miles, that would be the evidence.

Any change in the mileage should require a code from the manufacturer which is then recorded on the vehicle registration database. The Mileage can also be recorded on the same database at the service intervals not just the MOTs. If this was made a rule, then it could be the responsibility of the seller to make sure the mileage is correct or else the buyer should be able to demand their money back.

As great many cars are serviced at the same time they get their MOT, it might be considered a bit superfluous.

In all but a few cases I don't really understand the argument about converting from km to miles as a valid reason for changing the reading. How many cars have a mechanical counter these days? And if it's a digital counter, it's a severe design flaw if it can't be switched to read in either.

I think the emphasis on that particular feature is the media's attempt at yet another dig at the European markets. Or it could be the "mileage correction" services cynical promotion of their need.

Aren't people most likely to clock the car before it's first MOT though?

Fleet punts a 3 year old lease car sans MOT - Arthur Daley buys it with 130k on the clock, winds it back to 40k, MOTs it........

A quick check of it's service and warranty history will tell you if a car like that has been clocked.
