The date on tins is just a 'best before' rather than a 'use by'. It just means they might not be quite as flavoursome. It doesn't meant the contents will have gone off - see http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/asksam/foodlabels/asksamlabelterms/#A220019

If you don't want to put them in a dish at the moment, why not reduce the contents down with some garlic and herbs, freeze it in cubes and then use in sauces or as pizza topping?

I tend to look at how long the product is meant to last when deciding if something out of date is ok to use. If product life is measured in days, then more than a day or two out of date needs serious checking. If product life is measured in weeks, then a few days should be fine, if it is months, then a week or two is probably ok. If life is years, then a few months is probably fine!

And as Peartree has said above, 'best before' really means very little. Before food had to have dates on it, people just used common sense with things like tins - if rusty or bulging, safer to chuck it out! Otherwise, tinned food is designed to last a long time, so an undamaged tin which isn't rusty or bulging should be ok, but obviously if you are suspicious sniff and taste first!

When my gran moved out into a care home years ago, we cleared out her hoards of food, some of it was at least 15-20 years old, and of the things that looked/tasted/smelled ok, nothing made us ill. Obviously, the tins with the bottoms rusted out and the contents leaked into a gooey mess on the shelf weren't an option!!! Likewise the sealed drinks reduced to a thick sludge at the bottom of the bottle!:rotfl:

My fav tinned tomato recipe is tomato and chickpea soup - a really old one from when family circle did storecupboard recipes:)

cut and fry a rasher of bacon and one onion, add 2 tins chopped toms, garlic, stock cube, half pint water, tin of chickpeas drained and rinsed first, and a handful of fresh basil or a tablespoon or dried. Cook for about 20 mins and serve - a lovely thick filling soup.

My local Somerfield is soon to be changing to Co-op and are selling all their Somerfield branded goods cheap. One thing being tinned tomatoes so i have stocked up. Cant resist a bargain :o
It is something i buy anyway but dont use that often, mainly for bolognese sauce or stews/casseroles.
Anything else exciting i can do with them? They are mainly chopped tomatoes, some with herbs or garlic.
Prefer recipes using fairly basic ingredients, nothing too fancy.
    TIA

Open the can, remove tomatoes, mush to a paste with a potato masher. Remove clothing, smear tomate paste all over oneself, roll around in porridge oats, invite the neighbours in to lick clean....................... should be exciting.
