Put cooked pasta in an ovenproof dish, put the hot tomatoes on top, cover with grated cheese, put in hot oven for 20 mins.

I love tinned tomatoes on toast for breakfast. An easy dinner - scrambled eggs, baked beans, tinned tomatoes and toast. Love this.

I use them as a base for soup/stew - fry loads of veg, garlic, herbs (any), add 2 tins of tomatoes, some lentils/dried peas etc, add some pearl barley and simmer till beans and veg are cooked. then add some stock cubes to taste (don't add stock cubes till teh beans are cooked as salt makes them cook slower). we usually have this with dumplings (mix 1 lot suet with 2 lots SR flour, add milk to make a dough, roll into little balls, drop in soup, simmer with lid on for about 20 mins - I sometimes add grated cheese, onion or herbs to these).

Tinned tomatoes are an absolute store cupboard essential: if I haven't got a can, I get twitchy!

I can't add to the above ideas, except to say that an Italian would keep their "ragu" sauce as simple as possible: olive oil, onion and garlic, tomatoes and herbs. They would also always "bring the pasta to the sauce" and gently mix them together before serving.

Tinned tomatoes are evidently better for you than fresh ones: the rapid heat of the canning process concentrates some beneficial chemical compound.

When buying tinned tomatoes, go for the whole ones. Not only are they usually slightly cheaper, but also they can obviously be used both whole and chopped up. It is very difficult to stick the chopped ones back together again.

When chopping up whole tinned tomatoes, drain off some of the liquid and chop them up in the can. This is so much easier than chasing the slippery little blighters around a pan!

I add them to casseroles, they add a richness, however wherever you add tomatoes, I find you have to add a little sugar too.
  • i love tinned tomatos and used to buy the expensive ones but now have started buying the value chopped ones and they are much better than the value whole ones...plus i've found asda to do the best value chopped, very thick and no yellow bits!

Can't really add anything to all the suggestions, but just wanted to say whole aren't always cheaper than tinned. Can't remember where I was (Morrisons or Tesco, probably), but chopped were cheaper.

It's one of things that was true, but if you don't check everyso often, they change in and get you...Just like bigger packs aren't always cheaper.
It was the value toms, or equivilent, so maybe they can use misshapen ones if they chop them?

    tomato and carrot soup.

saute an onion in a little olive oil.
add a few carrots, that have been peeled and roughly chopped.
add a few tins of tomatoes and a little water or stock.
simmer for about 20 mins. cool then blend until smooth.
keeps well in teh freezer, is low in fat and cals and is really tasty. You can make it as thick or thin as you like. Makes a great stand by pasta sauce as well ;-)

I've just gone through my cupboards and realised that I have a tonne of tinned chop tomatoes that I need to use before buying anything else. I love tomato soup and it would be great if I can find a recipe easy enough to follow to make my very own.... :p

So any ideas and recipes... fire them away!

  • put toms in the remoska with a big bunch of basil , olive oil and salt and pepper and cook down, add some nice veg stock and blend, the small pots of concentrate are nice !!

You can add some cream, but dont use the basil then !!

Let me know how it goes !!

    Hi Buzzbox,

There's an earlier thread that should give you some ideas for using up the tomatoes so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

For tomato soup recipes, this thread should help:
