I've always thought that by getting the whole tomatoes you are getting better quality since all the bruised/overripe leftovers would go for chopping, just a thought.0

hi everyone and happy new year!!
ive also decided to cut down on my shopping, and to use up what i already have. now, ive found 5 tins of tomatoes in my cupboard and im not keen on them on toast, so i bought them with the idea to use them as a base for italian/indian meals. i also have three jars of pataks indian pastes which tell you how to make a nice curry using tinned tomatoes, but i cant have curry every night!!! im not sure how to make a sort of pasta sauce with them, surely just empptying them into a pan and adding herbs would still leave the whole sauce very watery?
what else can i do with them? i have plenty of herbs, frozen veg, pasta and rice. i do have a few tins of mixed beans which i bought to make some sort of chilli con carne for jacket potatoes but have lost the recipe!
any help would be very much appriciated!!!

I make a basic pasta sauce by sauteing some onions, add garlic, italian herbs (or basil, oregano or whatever you have) and the tinned toms, simmer for a few mins to thicken slightly, chuck over pasta with cheese on top.
If you have tom puree, a squirt of that adds flavour and thickness and I sometimes throw in frozen peas/sweetcorn/chickpeas.
Yummy!0 -
chop the toms up small and then simmer them slowly to reduce them, adding whatever seasonings you like.
i used to make a super cheap pasta sauce at uni of tinned tomatoes, simmered down, and then stir in grated cheese til its smooth. yum!
chilli - fry onion, add whatever combination of mince/vegmince/beans/veg you like, and a couple chopped tins of toms. add in a little chilli powder, some seasonings (ie worcestershire sauce), and simmer slowly. super cheap and healthy.0 -
Fry chopped onions and bacon, (& mushrooms if you like) then chop the tomatoes and add to the frying pan and simmer until all the ingredients break down to become a purree. Excellent and cheap on pasta with a little grated cheese added.
Alternatively, chop the tomatoes finely and add to a saucepan with chopped mixed veg (onions, celery, swede, turnip, leeks, water and a stock cube or two) to make a hearty minestrone soup. Simmer for about 30 minutes.0 -
Use as a topping on pizza - just stick in a saucepan and simmer down till they're quite condensed. Either buy or make a pizza base (there's a recipe on here somewhere), top with mozzarella, olives, ham - whatever you like!0

another vote for pasta - try this one, which i'm doing tonight, or you can cook them with onions, peppers, courgettes and a little chorizo (you can get a huge sausage of it for a few quid from lidl), as others have described (pop the chorizo in, cut into chunks, after the onions and fry gently), served with pasta also, which is very very nice.

you could make a chicken curry with them:D
tinned toms
chicken
madras paste
spring onions
garlic and oil
fry spring onions in oil, add chicken pieces and then curry paste.
add the tinned toms and simmer until cooked
add cornflour to thicken if too thin!:j'If you judge people, you have no time to love them'
