Ideas for glut of tinned tomatoes?

I made this (post 3):http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1236267 the other day and it was very nice indeed. We also do cobbler with onions, middle-eastern spices cooked very slowly. Then a couple of handfulls of basmati rice cooked in, a tin of chickpeas and cheese and courgette scones on top. Always goes down well!0

hi all ive just sorted out my tin cupboards out and found 6 tin of chopped tomatoes the date on them is dec 09 and march 09  terrible i know .are they still ok to use or shall i just throw them .if they are ok to use what could i make with:j0

They'll be fine - tinned stuff can last for years without going off (although I'd follow the usual rule of giving the contents a sniff before using, just in case the can has been damaged at some point - I do this with anything tinned anyway, no matter what age it is).
You could use them to make tomato sauce for pizza / pasta, tomato soup, as a base for bolognese sauce, chilli, casserole... There's almost no limit to the uses for tinned tomatoes in my experience!
Back after a very long break!0 -
If the can is undamaged we take no notice of sell by dates on them.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

As long as the tin is not bulging then the contents should be fine.
Tinned tomatoes are great for sauce, soup, anything requiring cooked tomatoes, really!
Include the juice for sauces and soup, drain it ofr a recipe that just specifies a certain number of tomatoes0 -
Use them, they'll be fine. I go through 10 tins of tomatoes a month and theres just me and OH- I use them in so much. Three very easy, quick weekday evening meal ideas:
Quick pasta sauce:
-Fry onion and garlic on a medium heat in a little oil until soft
-add optionals now ie, bacon, tinned tuna, mushrooms, chillies, veggies (even minced beef/ lamb to make a bolognaise although this needs to be browned and benefits from a stock cube!)
-at this point I'll add a splash of wine if I have any open, reduce the heat and let evaporate
-tip in tomatoes and simmer for 15 mins (season as necessary)
Baguette pizza:
-Fry onion and garlic on a medium heat in a little oil until soft
-tip in tomatoes and simmer for 15 mins (season as necessary)
-allow to reduce on a low heat for 20 mins
-cut baguette in half length ways (stale bread works best!!)
-spoon a little of the tomato mix onto the bread and spread out as you would on a pizza
- add any cooked toppings
-add cheese
-grill until cheese has melted
-serve with salad
Tomato and balsamic soup:
-fry onion in a little butter (can use frylight)
-pour in about 2 tbsp basalmic vinegar and allow to evapourate
-pour in 2 tins of toms and simmer for 30mins
-season to taste and add basil if desired
-cool and blend
-reheat and eat!

Hi castri09,
I would think that they'll be fine. Just give them a sniff when you open them and if they smell and look ok, then taste a tiny bit and if they taste ok then use them.
I use them to make pizza, pasta sauces, bolognese and chilli, in lamb or chicken casseroles, soups etc. You'll find more ideas on this thread:

They're fine to use as long as the can is not rusty and the content is of the normal color. However, it would e best to use them as soon as you can. the above recipe suggestions are great. I would try one for myself.
