Good morning all
Have read this thread with interest and before i go on all is well now.
About 12 yrs ago i was a dedicated saver and it was always one day
the family can go to florida, one day we can get our dream car and i will get my dream motorbike and then my wife was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and all these one day dreams seemed as if they could not happen. 12yrs later after 2 lots of surgery, chemo and radiotherapy all is well and all the one day dreams have been done including the motorbike.
My point is we dont know what is around the corner, life has to be enjoyed as well. Life is not all about saving.
Big fat +1. I save a decent amount but we have fun, also. In fact we're going to Florida next year ourselves - never know what is around the corner so best to use some, too. Sorry to hear about the ordeal you went through, and glad now that things are getting better for you.0 -
Hello eveyone!
I hope you all had a lovely Christmasguitarman001 wrote: »From your OP your net salary indicates a gross of about £30k which isn't bad for age 28. In fact I'm envious as I'm private sector earning roughly similar (clearly private sector engineering jobs don't pay as well as public sector) and don't have the level of savings you do. £200 pcm living, so you stay at home. I must spend £600-800 a month (fuel, digs, lunches, student loan, etc). Used to think I was doing well with my savings until I came onto this forum.
Read one of your 1st posts - why should your friends be angry with you if you haven't got your first home yet? This is brainwashing IMO and none of their business. I bet by now they've probably lost money on their homes. Buy at the bottom, hold off for now (the housing market is tanking).
Hello guitarman001 thank you for the post.
I must say i couldn't stop laughing when i read living cost less than £200pcm, i only wished. My travel cost alone in the last 2 months has gone up to £140 pcm + bills and general spend, it's more like £450 pcm since i've been serious about saving again.
Regarding my friends, they are just annoyed as we all had the same dreams but i ended up travelling around the world with the money instead of saving it (still no regrets). Hence why they own properties in London, in the sought after areas. Oh well, they can afford London prices with their salaries being alot more than mine
Property prices falling? the areas that i wish would fall, are some how rising. I really think it depends on what part of the country you live in.MoneySaverLog wrote: »This blog is very inspiring, thank you and well done on hitting the first target. I'm someway behind you but will get there, I'm looking for a 6 figure savings pot to buy though, I'm thinking somewhere between 5 and 7 years time for that :-)
We've both signed up to the same 12k in 12 months challenge :T
Hello MoneySaverLog thank you for your post. I would love to save a 6 figure sum prior to purchase, but i really cannot see myself living at the family home any longer than my target date(unless the Government thinks of any more clever ideas:mad:). As its really hard work:rotfl:. Fingers cross i'll get this new job and with the extra money i will be getting, i will be able to save more ...
Bye for now...

Merry christmas Sylvia, and keep on saving.
Interesting post above from the OH of a cancer sufferer. But given some w/cancer are denied life extending or saving drugs in some areas due to costs, I'd rather have the savings to fund treatment privately (around 30K per year for some drugs) just in case.
I was in Cancer and Aids research before I moved to the UK and am aware that in some cases the UK is behind in treatment methods.0 -

Thank you atush, I know exactly what you mean by personal experience. The only reason why my ex boyfriend is still with us is due to private treatment that his uncle had to pay for, as it ended up being a six figure sum at the end. Result of NHS refusing to treat him
Thank you to those who have followed and help me this year. I do hope you all have a lovely night and enjoy what 2012 brings to you all. I will see you all next year
bye for now...

I am glad that things have stabilised for you but I have a different outlook.
Dh recently had a double hernia op after waiting for a very long time. What if either of us needed a non-urgent op like a knee replacement, what if one of the grandchildren needed life saving treatment in america, what if we need care when we get old? What if life-saving drugs get too expensive for the nhs? I want us to be able to choose for ourselves and savings will allow us to do so. If, at the end of the day, we have to go into care then we will be able to choose platinum care. If there is money left after our lives, then the children and grandchildren will benefit
Savings gives us choice and independence
sylvia 1982, you are an inspiration. Well done0 -

Thank you Kittie for your post and i hope your DH is okay. I do agree with what you have written, especially with the way things are going.
Take care...
