    What's the best time of day to get these bargains? I never see anything in the reduced section at a decent price never mind even being good enough to buy!

    this doesn't work in asda, they reduce it enough so you are getting a bargain and till ignores the original discount

    Blimey, JanetRose, you must be unlucky. I shop at Tesco, generally on a Wed pm (not being employed gives greater flexibility) and we have found some great bargains on things like meat, which I am excessively fussy with, having been veggie for 10 years previously.

    Of course, one must wait in turn until the queue in front of the shelf dies down.....

    In Iceland its the earlier the better (like before 9am) for the current days date stuff or the less reduced following days date, and anytime on a Saturday for anything up until Mondays date (the Sunday staff dont reduce anything so they do it all on the Saturday)

  • I get so many of these reduced bargains, that I had to buy a keyring calculator..................my brain isn't quick enough to do the math before its grabbed from the shelf!
    Sainsbury's at the moment, are selling fresh salmon £5.99 a pkt, get 2nd pkt for 99p.
    Tonight they were reduced to £2.49 a pkt, so I got 2 pkts, thinking it would be £3.48. The store is miles away and I don't drive.
    When I got home, I noticed that I'd been charged the full £5.99 + 99p. No bargain there, I only bought it to put in the freezer at that price :(
    So I rang the store and spoke to customer service, she told me her name and said to take the receipt back next time, for a full refund.
    Luckily I am back that way tomorrow, so will do it then, otherwise I'd have ended up never going back, as its out of my way.

    Asda do some something similiar. Example today (and offer until 13/3 for anyone interested) 2 bottles of Pepsi Max for £2 pretty good anyway however they have Pepsi Max Twist on offer at 98p. Being a Pepsi drinker I bought 6 bottles (to last a month honest!)
    Till reciept 98p x 6 Mulitbuy saving 1.92
    Therefore making it 66p a bottle!
    bargain I think
  • i work in tesco's.

    most reductions start at 6pm and items are usually halved in price, they then wait till around 9-10pm and reduce items to something riduculas e.g.

    two bits of fresh samon original price £4.00

    6pm -> £2

    10pm -> .20p

    someone came to my till i was like !!!!!! how cheap is that

    I think the reductions depend on who does them in each store rather than a definate policy?
    I shop in Tesco between 6-7PM on a Wednesday & see the guys going round collectiong up the stuff & reducing it, depends on who is in each section as some things can be reduced by half and others by 90% straight away. On the other hand, my local Sainsburys reduce stuff from opening time onwards but NEVER reduce it by more than 50% even at closing time. I have spoken with someone on these baords who does this in Sainsburys & he says he always reduced by more like 70% to start with because it's less work for him to go back & reduce it further later & he needs to shift it anyway he can. I have come to the conclusion it's just luck!

    I thought Tesco had recently introduced software which prevented getting the buy 1 get 1 half price bargins when reduced? I know Morrisons have signs up saying when items are reduced no other special offers will apply.

    The way it works in Sainsburys now is...

    If items are on BOGOF, and are reduced in price, you will get the reduced price (not the full price) of one item taken off your bill.

    If items are on a buy 2 for £x offer, you will get the full discount taken off your bill even if the items are bought at a reduced price.

    E.g. fishcakes are often on offer for buy 2 for £2 - usual cost is £1.50 per packet. I got 2 packets reduced to 75p each (total cost £1.50) and had a further £1 taken off the bill at the checkout. Total cost to me was 50p. If they had been on BOGOF, they would have cost 75p!

    How this would normally work is £5.99+£5.99-£5.00 = £6.98
    Reduced it would be £2.49+£2.49-£5.00 = -2p
