are tesco giving money away ?

I was checking through my till receipt from tescos after last weeks shop, when I noticed they had actually paid me to buy some of the goods?
My husband did not believe it so we popped to another tesco store a couple of evenings later and did the same thing again.
So how does it work?
We purchased bread cakes, salad and meat that had been marked down in price, some of the salad and bakery products were by 1 get 1 free or buy 1 get 2nd half price.
So say 6 hot cross buns at 99pence were marked down to 10p the computer that is connected to the till has not been programmed to work with the difference, so you buy the buns for 10p the till then takes 99 pence off your bill, it does this on the other products as well.

Yes, as long as the reduction ticket does not have a bar code on it, it can do that. I managed to buy a chart CD and some shopping for 21p once by scanning through about 20 mangoes.
The way it works is
FULL PRICE
Mango is £1 But BOGOF so the till will do the following
Mango £1
Mango £1
DEDUCT £1
TOTAL: £1
Reduced price
Mango 10p
Mango 10p
DEDUCT £1 (as that is what it is programmed to do if 2 mangoes go through)
TOTAL: 80p credit
They are are in effect, paying you to take the stuff away. I used to work at Tesco so I knew how it works.0 -
That's priceless
Well done!0 -
Sainsburys have the same kind of special offer. Works best on stuff thats heavily discounted due to the sell by date.....eg Hovis Rolls that also had a BOGOF on them.illegitimi non carborundum0

moving this to Shop but don't drop as this is not a Grabbit bargain really0

They wont give you the money, but u can easily subsidise your shopping costs by doing this.
You just need to work out how much the till is programmed to deduct as part of the multibuy.
For example, say chicken kiev is 2 for £3 (individual price is £2). The till is going to deduct £1 when it scans through 2. If you can get them for 50p you will get them for free. Less than that on the reduced sticker and you are into 'credit'.0 -

I agree i normaly try to make it realistic,so i get £30 of shopping for about £80 -
They seem wise to that round our way - all the BOGOF products only get reduced so much so as not to go too cheap or into negative.
And careful too with Tescos. As mentioned above, if the reduced yellow sticker has a barcode on it, it doesn't deduct the BOGOF discount. Sainsburys still do though.
(Ever noticed how shopping !!!!!! plant their trolley across the reduced section so they can sift through the bargains without allowing others near until they've cleaned out all the good stuff? Maybe it's just round my way!)BE NICE - IT'S FREE!0 -
I do love it when I get these bargains. Did notice that last time I bought bogof fruit at Sainsburys reduced it only deducted the reduced price not the full amount.
I bought some reduced hot x buns yesterday, buy 2 for £1 normally 75p each down to 30p each still deducted the 50p so 2 packs for 20p!! I was pleased as we all love them in our house!0 -
I have noticed that tesco seems to have changed the way it calculates these discounts.
If something is say Buy 2 for £3 and then both items are reduced from £2 each to £1 each you would expect it to be £1 for both:
Item 1 £1
Item 2 £1
Deduct £1 (till programmed to do this)
Cost £1
However we have found that we got charged £2 - £1 each item. When we queried it they said that as it was reduced you were getting it cheaper than the £3 for the two so the discount does not apply anymore.
Also if things ar BOGOF and reduced - they give you one free by deducting the reduced price - not the full price....
Didn't used to work like this. Now I don't save hardly anything.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
