Made weetabix loaf on Sunday and it was blooming lovely! I've been taking it to work and have some very jealous work mates.

I've just taken a tea loaf out of the oven and have managed to burn my mouth trying to have a nibble before its had the chance to cool down!

    Thanks folks :A

    Hi there

My tea loaf receipe, cheap, easy and tasty

    1 cup currants
1 cup of tea, fresh made soak currants until cold
    2 cups self raising flour
    1 cup caster sugar

Mix well pour into lined 2lb tin 180c for 50 mins. Serve in thick slices buttered. Delish

I've been experimenting with this one as well. Thanks Grumswifie. I found the original recipe a bit too sweet so have been using apple juice instead of tea and leaving out the sugar. This worked with mixed fruit and dates - just bring the fruit and juice to the boil and leave too cool. The date version was very sticky but nice.

So easy and so good. Very money saving too as I've been using cheapy AF apple juice that no one likes to drink

  • I know this is an old thread but there are some great recipes on here. Grumswifie had a wonderful Tea Cake, it's actually the same recipe that my granny used to make, a really delicious cake. I thought you might all like to try this one as well, this is another of my old Grans recipes.

    Potato Cake
    2lb Potatoes
    3ozs butter
    2-3 tablespoons sugar
    6 ozs sultanas
    1 beaten egg
    2 tablespoons SR flour

Boil the potatoes, drain and while still hot add the sugar and butter and mash well add the beaten egg and mix well into the mash then add the sultanas and flour. Mix again and spread evenly on a well greased tin, rough up the top with a fork. Cook in the middle of the oven for around an hour until golden brown. Gas 6-7. It really is delicious.
  • I have just read through this thread and can't believe how many people have made my cake! Chuffed to bits!

Oh dear, I thought a tea loaf was callled that because you had it at tea time, not because it was made with it :o

Hello, I was searching for cheap cake recipes and came across this thread
I like the look of this recipe, i have a huge glut of dried dates to use up, do you think I could substitute 1 cup currants for 1 cup finely chopped dates instead?

Ok confession : I wasnt expecting much from this - I thought no fat, no eggs??

But it was amazing! I used cranberries instead of currants (wife doesnt like currants) - and we can't stop eating it :rotfl:

So another thank you for this recipe :T

Thats what I was thinking, I was wondering if it was a typo but no one else mentioned it.

I'm going to have to try it.
